Forum FAQ - for new folk, sort of thing

Because, frankly, it's about time there was one. Unless there used to be one, and I missed it. In which case, oops.

Could moderator/admin types add in anything I've forgotten, and snip out anything that's toss? Cheers.

Hey there, welcome to Alternative Nation.

Q. So what's this forum all about, then?

A. Anything and everything, really. It just a place for scruffy alternative types to ramble on about things that interest them. General Chat is fairly self explanatory, and there are also forums for Film, TV, Videogames, Music (split into various genres), Local Bands, Photography, and suchlike. Most decent clubs/pubs in Glasgow have a sub-forum. It's handy for arranging nights out, and the like. It's Glasgow-centric at the moment, but it's spreading, like a fungus. There's a wee small Ayr posse, and a few foreign types.

Q. I can post anything I like, then?

A.Within reason, yes. See the Forum Rules. Basically, racism and homophobia are unacceptable. You'll be given a warning to cut it out, and banned if you do not heed that warning. Fairly straightforward. Oh, yes, one more thing. Any threads which are Clearly Bollocks (eg "What font do you use on MSN?") should be started in Junk Talk. Such threads started in other forums will just get moved there by a Moderator anyway. Yes, they can do that.

Q. Back to that racism/homophobia deal for a sec. What about freedom of speech?

A. What indeed? Here's the deal, as posted by Ghostsuit a while back:

What it boils down to is this.
1) You DO have the right to speak out.
2) Nobody is required to give you a place to do so.
3) If you are afforded a forum, nobody is required to listen.
4) If they do listen, they aren't required to like or accept your statements.
5) If they don't like or accept your statements, they have just as much right to speak out against your statements or you as you had to make the statements in the first place.

Q. Ghostsuit?

A. Aye. He runs the show, so be nice.

Q. What's with this wee green dot?

A. That shows your reputation. Hover the cursor over it to get a trite phase telling you just how loved you are.

Q. How does that work, then?

A. Right, here we go. You give rep by clicking the wee box at the bottom-right corner of a post. You can either add or subtract points to/from a user's reputation, and it's considered polite to leave a comment or at least sign your name. You need to have a certain number of posts before you can give rep, in order to stop people from abusing the system with fake accounts, etc. The number of points you dole out depends on the number of points you have. You can only rep ten times a day, and you have to rep twenty other users before you can rep one user twice. You can view your own rep and comments by going to the User Control Panel and scrolling down. Rep marked with a green dot is positive. Red dot rep is negative, and grey dot rep is from users who cannot affect your rep.

You start off with ten points and a green dot. If you get into negative rep, you'll get a red dot. You get additional dots for every 100 points you get, either way. Someone with 270 positive rep, for example, would have 3 green dots. Someone with 165 negative rep would have two red dots.

After 500 points, you only get an additional dot for every 200 points. So no new dot at 600, but one at 700, and so forth.

Q. 'sake. Seems a bit complicated.

A. Give it time, it's a good system. Also, that wasn't a question.

Q. Alright, then. What does BGW/THC mean?

A. You don't want to know. Take it as a compliment and move on with your life.

Q. 2nd Best? True Story?

A. This forum is littered with in-jokes. Don't worry about it.

Q. The forum's quite nice to look at. I, however, have been recently lobotomised and would prefer it in a garish shade of pink.

A. Go to User Control Panel, click Options, and change the options in the "Style Set" box.

Q. How do I change my sig/avatar/custom text?

A. In the User Control Panel. There are seperate options for sigs and avatars. Custom text comes under "profile". Your avatar is limited to 100x100 pixels, and the sig limit is 150 up the way by 500 along the way.

Q. Subcribing to threads? Whit?

A. Aye. Means that threads you've posted in that have been recently active will appear in your User CP. Dead handy, like. You may also opt to have notifications of replies to these threads emailed to you.

Q. Who are the Supermods/Admins/folk in charge?

A. There's a comprehensive list right here

Q. Any posters I should be wary of?

A. MosDef. Anyone telling you to watch out for MosDef.
