It's just the way it works out. The MRC had put up a certain amount of cash to the department for a PhD student, the department asked CRUK if they would pay the rest but they only paid some of the rest. The department coughed up the odds.
It led to no end of bother with actually getting my money sorted out. All of the financial secretaries were confused by it which led to me being skint as fuck for many weeks.
