Well I have to say I think far from being traditional Slavery was more of a commercial venture then a tradition... Well if you want to term it as (I assume is implied) Europeans stealing Africans anyway. There is a tradition of the rich making slaves of the folk who lived on their land (serfdom and the like) I suppose.
That said I have to agree the "traditional route" arguements pretty shite.
