Its pretty widely accepted that people use humour to deflect from the seriousness of certain events. "If we didn't laugh we'd cry" etc etc. It's found quite often in constructionist health research when Men, discussing relatively serious health issues, will use humour in their narrative to 'lighten the mood'.
