Let's say an averagely (or above) intelligent person, over the age of eighteen who might appreciate a good book. The only reason I included a 'general' restriction was to weed out the more specialist books or those that will only appeal to a narrow audience. For example, I enjoyed Denis Diderot's The Nun, but I wouldn't recommend it to a group of people that I didn't know very well, or that hadn't yet mentioned French philosophers or the Enlightenment in conversation.

It's pretty difficult to define. How about "a book you would recommend to a new work colleague if the conversation came up"?
