It depends on how busy places are, but generally you have to make an appointment.
As for the test, there's nothing major. They get you to look at charts with letters of decreasing size to see how far you can see. They test both your eyes at the same time and each one individually. You get to wear a bulky frame that holds lenses so that the optician can gauge what kind of prescription you may need. There are a few other things but there's nothing particularly invasive about the procedure.
