the 2 most popular resolutions in use today are 1024x768 and 800x600, the percentage of people still using 800x600 is significant enough that it should be the resolution for which you design your site, depending on your target audience not designing to cater for this resolution you could be pushing away up to half of them never to return because they've had a bad browsing experience, i'm running at a resolution of 1280x1024 and it still looked huge on my screen
that may have come across as harsh but i've just woken up from a nap and a bit cranky, no harshness intended
