It's not prescription, although dentists do prescribe it sometimes (that's how I started using it). It's quite good, but leaves your mouth feeling furry and you can taste it for hours (I only use it at night). It's not as mouth numbingly horrible as Listerine.
I've got an electric toothbrush that my mum gave me that apparently flosses and brushes, but I don't use it nearly often enough - it seems quite a lot of hassle. On the good side, it buzzes to tell you when you've been brushing for long enough and it hold change for weeks.
