As you allude to, it's all about how it's phrased. I remember reading if Alec Salmond's preferred phrasing was used, support for independence is pretty high, around 40%. If it's more like 'Scotland will become a separate state from the UK', support drops to around 20. With Labour currently in freefall, there's no telling where public support for it will be in a couple of years.
It's a brave move by Wendy Alexander, she knows she could probably win a vote if it was held today, but then again support for 'Eck is something like 70 points above her own. Unless she does a double U-turn there will
definately be a referendum on independence by 2011.
