If you're not getting a Dell (only stuff my company sells, and year after year one of the most consistently well-performing bits of hardware I've had the pleasure to deal with - with a great support website and decent warranties), the Toshiba Satellite or HP Pavilions are generally a good bet.
Lenovo makes a good laptop, but it tends to be marketed towards more businessy types
Acers, Aspires, Gateways (Now owned by Acer, iirc)...urgh. Just save yourself a headache
