Supply and demand, in my opinion, would place purchases of 'Sponser Status' at a purely altruistic level; free advert blocking software services are available easily, and if you want to have unlimited PMs, then simply direct people to your e-mail account.
It makes the purchase a pointless frivolity, bought for altruistic reasons, or possibly as conspicuous consumption. These two reasons alone are not really enough to encourage me to buy anything.
If the price were lowered to a more reasonable level, then perhaps I would buy; for purely convenient reasons, but I would much rather spend five minutes of my time being inconvenienced than, say, five pounds to not.
