The prince's private income increased by only 1%, to £16.4m, during the last financial year.

That money, which comes from the surplus generated by the Duchy of Cornwall – the landed estate given to the heir to the throne – increased by £185,000 to £16.4m.

Charles's official expenditure rose by nearly 20%, from £10.4m to £12.5m. The heir to the throne paid less tax, with his bill falling from £3.42m to £3m, a drop of almost 10%.
