Ah...the wonderful racism of my new home.
Wog is used here to refer to people of Italian descent only. If they want to be racist to black people, they straight out use the N word, or 'darkie' or if it's an Indigenous person, 'Abbo'.
They treat Indigenous people (Aboriginal, Torres Straits Islanders, Maoris) quite badly here and the level of institutional racism is shocking. I'm teaching here and the expectations of these students is very low, and the attitude towards them is pretty upsetting.
The incident with the Aboriginal man and the police van is being looked at by the UN as a Human Rights violation. Thank goodness. Absolute disgrace, but sadly, when it happened here, it only merited a small article on the 4th page of the biggest newspaper in the state (WA).
Reading a story with my 2nd year students this week and there's a mixed race relationship in it. A 14 year old boy put his hand up and told me, "There's something wrong in that story though Miss. A white person would never kiss a black person."
Didn't even consider the fact there there were 4 Indigenous students in the class, one sitting right beside him.
