| Re: Hammershaw Split cassette out August cassette tapes are a horrible format. i spent hundreds of pounds on one of the best machines you could buy (manual calibration, external power supply, etc) back when the technology was more relevant but i can't see releasing music on them now as anything but wanky.
i can accept the low fidelity of the format (even on metal tape, which pre-recorded releases rarely were!) - the music is more important than the reproduction etc and okay you might wanna make some kinda point out of that.
i can accept that inhibiting the ease with which a remote-controlled CD player can be commanded to skip through tracks - perhaps there's some reason you'd wanna encourage people to listen through each side in order (though you could just make a CD with one long track to accomplish that)
arguably it might reduce piracy due to the increased effort to rip, though it never stopped piracy when it was the predominant format...
but the limited lifespan and ease of destruction of the tape, and the decreasing prevalence of players makes me think that whatever reasons for clinging to that format just aren't good reasons. i suppose there might be some parallel to be made with vinyl, which i do love. i mean, though 12"s and albums can sound good, 7"s never do. there is something satisfyingly mechanical about the players of both formats... and yes i do cling to OLD things in my choice of cars, hairstyles etc...
but releasing something on only one (comparatively obscure) format just grates with me as putting image in front of music which i find crass and crappy.
