it's POSSIBLE to get tapes to sound good, it just rarely seems to happen
music that doesn't have much in the way of quiet passages certainly fairs better! good quality tape helps a lot, metal > chrome > ferric, and accurate calibration of the heads helps but most people don't have that facility.
just seems to me there are other technologies that accomplish the goal better of getting the sound made by the band into people's ears in a faithful way.
