Babyshambles need no introduction for all of the wrong reasons. Pete Doherty’s very public and much discussed drug addiction has overshadowed anything that this band has ever done, and that is a shame. Doherty is one of these people that the public love to hate, and his legion of incredibly loyal defenders will protect him without logic or reason creating an even wider canyon between his supporters and those who have already judged him for his drug addictions.
However, Pete Doherty is a talented writer of poetry and music, and whilst many of his knockers may have heard little of the music it is his music that should be the only reason he makes headlines. The fact his music is rarely the subject of the news he makes is a shame, after all, Doherty’s use of drugs is hardly unique to him in the music business.
So to business, is this single any good? Well, forget what you heard from Babyshambles' first album, which was an embarrassment for any writer with Doherty’s abilities, and open your ears and your preconceptions and you might just hear a track that goes back to Doherty’s beginnings; the ones that made him famous in the first place, before drugs and supermodels and before he found himself the tabloids' favourite man to hate.
This song gets Babyshambles back on track. Pete sings with clarity in a voice that is instantly recognisable and his lyrics are interesting and well written. The music is, perhaps, typically Indie. This is Doherty getting back to what he does very well, writing personal songs full of emotion and beauty. If you think that Babyshambles is all Doherty and your already have a view of this man, then perhaps this is the song to turn your views 180 degrees.
If all you know of Pete Doherty is from the tabloids then let this single show you what Doherty should be famous for. The single is widely available now in various formats through Parlophone Records.
