Well not quite, a sleepy little town at the head of Windermere is unlikely to be featuring in a GTA franchise near you anytime soon…
CSI: Ambleside however is the title of an album that heralds the return, like cherubim and seraphim, of indie legends Half man half biscuit.
Anyone who responded to the joyous news that Half Man Half Biscuits eleventh album is finally with us with apathy, or worse an ignorant “who?, please feel free to follow the example of bad losers on yahoo chess and sign yourselves off from the human race.
Actually apathy might be a fair reaction given the albums been out since the end of April but I just got mine today ok? Christ, if I’d have known you were reading I’d have slit my wrists…
The album is the usual eclectic mix of indie punk, traditional arrangements and obscure pop. Cultural referencing.
Henman hill, sat nav. and Dan Brown appear in album opener Evening of swing [has been cancelled], daytime television returns in Took problem chimp to ideal home show (changing rooms and their ilk), sideways swipes at the middle classes (oo-er) are the staple of Totnes Bickering Fair, Hi-vis vests, roid rage, disabled badge abuse, Bubblewrap, apple macs and baccarat all grace the latest lyrical work of genius from Blackwell.
Musically they sound like HMHB and in fairness its not the best album they have ever produced but HMHB are the kind of band who don't really have bests or worsts and in that regard they are a bit like the indie rock version of Doctor Who. For all the hardcore HMHB fans may lament the very occassional misfires they are unlikley to ever abandon the band. Listening to HMHB is somewhat of an indie badge of honour afterall.
You will either forgive HMHB sounding like HMHB or you won't but I ask you can you justify not owning an album which contains the lyric
“To the east Brokeback Mountain, to the west, Benny Hill”?
