JUKEBOX JURY at the BRITISH ACADEMY OF COMPOSERS & SONGWRITERS SEMINAR
Attending a recent seminar hosted by The British Academy of Composers & Songwriters, one of our EP tracks - ‘Contradictions’ - was given a Jukebox Jury-style review by a panel of professional songwriters including Steven Severin - founding member of Siouxsie & The Banshees, Ken McCluskey - former singer of The Bluebells, you’ll know their pop-ditty “Young At Heart” and Rico - electro-punk artist & producer, once heralded as Glasgow’s Trent Reznor.
Amongst the playlist of typical Scottish indie blandness, schmaltzy ballads and bizarre comedy-pop offerings, Attica Rage blasted from the speakers and proved to be the liveliest and, not surprisingly, the heaviest track of the day. Without expecting much praise from a panel not known for their heavy metal credentials, they were quite positive in some ways (or maybe just polite

. Steven Severin liked the melodic vocal style (as opposed to growls & screams!) and commented on the strong riff being repeated throughout the song. He got the old-school vibe too. He also offered some views on production about the importance of balance between guitars and vocals. Overall, thumbs up from Mr. Siouxsie Sioux! Ken ‘Bluebells’ McCluskey didn’t have much to say – you could just tell it wasn’t his cup of Chai - but probably felt he needed to offer some constructive advice so went on about the lack of a chorus. Eh, there is one there, but never mind… Rico spoke from a production point of view and said he would prefer it to be heavier – sounds good to us!
So, nothing new really but it was good to hear a key member of punk/goth/rock history comment on our song. At the end of the day, as long as our fans like it and we like it…..that’s all that matters!

WHEN JONNY MET LEMMY!
OK, this isn’t strictly band news but when one of us meets a living legend of rock ‘n roll, you just wanna shout about it!
On Thursday 9th November, Jonny met one of his all-time influential personal heroes –the God of Rock n’ Roll - Mr Motorhead himself – Lemmy Kilmister! As well as meeting the rest of Motorhead - guitarist Phil Campbell and drummer Mikkey Dee. Having won guest list places for the band’s Birmingham Academy tour date through a Metal Hammer competition, things got even sweeter when the magazine rep arranged for Motorhead’s tour manager to provide passes to the Aftershow party. About 40 minutes after the gig had ended, Mikkey and Phil turned up and were happy to chat to everyone, asking about how the sound had been in the venue and about the Thin Lizzy cover they’d put in the set (‘Rosalie/Cowboy Song’). Photos were taken, hands were shaken (literally!) but it seemed that the main man wasn’t going to be appearing. However, about 12.30am he sneaked into the bar – instant rock star charisma flooding the room and drawing everyone’s stares. Like the true professional, he went around the groups of fans and backstage liggers making sure to speak to everyone, signing and getting photos taken. Jonny eventually got up the courage and ended up having a 10 min face-to-face conversation with Lemmy – from Glasgow crowds and his favourite Glasgow venues (Barrowlands, the Apollo and pre-Apollo, Greens!) to Robbie Coltrane (who had attended the Glasgow tour date) to his favourite song from the new album (‘Kingdom of the Worm’) to the rare Motorhead ballads! Posing for a photo with Jonny, Lemmy then requested it be taken again in case the first one didn’t turn out right (it did!), then they shook hands and he headed on to the next group of fans hovering in the corner. And then Jonny fainted (well, almost!). Leaving the venue just after 1am, a quick final drink to run over the night’s events in Eddies No. 8 club (blagging free entry with the claim of “we’re with the Motorhead crew”) then he remembered….. “I forgot to get Attica Rage the support slot on next year’s UK Motorhead tour”! Maybe…..just maybe…….

So, hope you can make it along to the GiG Magazine Xmas Party - remember to order tickets in advance from us to be included in the prize draw before they sell out.
Cheers!
