Attica Rage's St Andrew's Day diary.....live PunkRockBlues show, radio, cheese & whisky!!!

Friday 30 November – St. Andrew’s Day – a day to celebrate the patron saint of Scotland? Or just another excuse for a booze-up and for celebrating Scotland and our proud nation?

"

Well…Attica Rage celebrated big style, taking part in a special one-off live event at Nice ‘n’ Sleazy, Glasgow along with punks The Zips and slide-guitarist & alt. bluesman Dave Arcari & Radiotones, entitled “PunkRockBlues: the alternative St. Andrew’s Day celebration”.

Each band had agreed to play a Scottish song as part of their set to keep in with the Scottish theme - Radiotones gave a bluesy rendition of Rabbie Burns’ “Parcel of Rogues”, The Zips punked-up the classic “Donald, Where’s Yer Troosers?!” and Attica - having hummed and hawed in the previous weeks over the lazier option of playing their version of The Almighty’s “Wild & Wonderful” or maybe learning a Big Country number – ended up going for a beefed-up, high-octane cover of The Proclaimer’s crowd-pleasing anthem “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”! Watch the video of Attica Rage’s “500 Miles” cover and check out more live videos on http://www.myspace.com/atticarage and http://www.youtube.com/jayrage

With the stage decked in Saltire & Lion Rampant flags and Bell wearing his kilt, Jonny wearing a towel “kilt” and Richie with his “See You Jimmy” tartan bunnet, everyone threw themselves into the spirit of the event! The night was a great success and to round off in true drunken-Scots style, all members of the three bands invaded the stage for a finale singalong of “Auld Lang Syne”. Memories of numerous family weddings and drunken relatives suddenly came flooding back!

Souvenir t-shirts featuring the PUNKROCKBLUES logo with date, venue & bands on the back are still available to buy for £7.50 (incl. p&p) – get in touch if you want one….hurry, sizes are limited and only a few remain!

The idea for the PunkRockBlues band gig had arisen after an earlier collaboration in summer, when JonZip, Jonny & Dave played a successful triple-header show of solo acoustic performances at the State Bar, Glasgow. Watch out in 2008 to see if “a Punk, a Rocker & a f*%ked-up Bluesman” decide to join forces once again…….

================================================== ====

Earlier on in the day, JonZip, Jonny & Dave had been special guests on Sammy B’s “Homegrown’’ radio show on UCA Radio 87.7 FM in Paisley University Ayr Campus. Joining them was alt. punk singer/songwriter Roscoe Vacant.

(JonZip, Roscoe Vacant, Jonny & Dave at UCA Radio)

Sammy’s show is famed for her classic Ayrshire banter & chat and her guests often play a live acoustic session and choose their favourite songs by other artists to play on air…but…and this is the quirky bit….. the main feature of her show is CHEESE! Not cheesy music….not cheese in any other sense of the word…but actual, real cheese of the eating kind! The show’s sponsor - local deli Chisholms of Ayr - supply a range of cheeses for Sammy and her guests to sample and taste live on air. And with the show starting at 1pm….the boys were hungry and very much looking forward to this!

Being a special St Andrew’s Day themed show, Sammy had lined-up an array of Scottish cheeses (precariously balanced on top of the mixing desk!). She also proved a most generous and welcoming host by cracking open a bottle of Glenmorangie malt and port for the lads to kick-start the celebrations in true Scots style! (3 drams later, Jonny was feeling…..er….warm... )

So…with cheese on plates, whisky in the jar and guitars in hand, the boys were ready to start!

Each guest got to play their selection of Scottish-based bands or songs, perform a song live and of course sample the cheeses! Much banter and laughter ensued – and an impromptu, unrehearsed show finale singalong of Sammy’s ode to Scottish cheeses in her self-penned “O Cheese of Scotland” to the tune of ‘Flower of Scotland’ - listen to the podcast of the show by clicking the links below.

You can also listen to Sammy B’s future shows on UCA Radio 87.7 FM, on digital radio and also online at http://www.macstreams.com. Listed below is the running order of the St Andrew’s Day show with the selections of songs played, the live performances and the cheeses being sampled.

(Just a wee note on Jonny’s choice of “Scottish” songs….
AC/DC
OK, officially Australian but 3 original members born in Scotland = claimed as Scottish band!
The Almighty – the best hard rock band to originate from Scotland (Strathaven) in last 20 years & a major influence on Attica Rage
Motorhead – er…bit of a tenuous link this one but, one-time ‘Head guitarist & co-writer on ‘Another Perfect Day’ album was Brian Robertson who is Scottish…..
well, Jonny had to get the “rawk” into the show playlist somehow….the rest of his selection included Dougie McLean, Del Amitri & The Proclaimers!!)
