I can't remember the last time I was at a straight up hip-hop night other than Freakmenoovers at the Artschool. What sort of hip hop are you looking for?

Well...

DBLSPK is quite good, although they don't exclusively rep hip hop. They're putting on Micall Parknsun tomorrow night, with the afterparty at The Artschool.

Basement Breaks is on the 3rd Thursday of every month at the 13th Note. I've yet to make it along, but I've heard good things.

I've always thought that I could put on a fucking smashing Hip Hop night (If I could DJ), but it just wouldn't get the interest it deserves.

Granted, E-40 and Keak Da Sneak don't have the pop culture presence and quotability of Li'l Jon.

In almost every other genre the programming is far more important than the technical skill. but with hip hop you probably do have to be able to do that whole scratching business to satisfy a discerning audience I guess... and that's far harder than just mixing dance stuff. But you're in employment now, get yourself some 1210s and get practicing!

That's the trick; the more "interesting" ( /specialised / obscure) the music, the harder it is to find the people who are gonna be interested in it. I think Glasgow has actually slipped a little over the last few years in the provision of niche nights; there are so many licenced places competing that it gets ever harder to attract viable numbers when you're up against the huge PR machines of the bigger players.

The seeming proximity of hip-hop and (the dreaded) RnB seems to make the latter absorb the former and stifle a lot of places that could probably be a bit braver in their playlists... Or that's my impression from the MOBO nights I've been at in The Tunnel and Blanket and yes even my stomping ground Bamboo. And from what I hear, Crib also. The stuff that makes it onto compilation CDs you can buy in supermarkets seems to be pushing more interesting MOBO further out of reach in a way that I don't think quite happened with dance music or even guitar music. But it's hard to gauge just how hard it would be to attempt something more adventurous, the current atmosphere in town isn't gonna convince many club owners to stick their necks out.
