Actually, could be the Flowerpot, knowing your kinda sound. You’d probably do better at the Vic though.

| Re: Booking Tours It'sjust a wee bit south of Derby in a place called Belper (next wee village going south), the place is called The Top Bar. Apparently its a known folk venue on the circuit. Not bad deal, money was mentioned by the promoter first before me having to ask - always a good sign. |

| Re: Booking Tours Aye, the Top Bar should be alright. Definitely a folk venue, definitely ‘on the circuit’. On the down side, it’s not in the city, so no passing trade. Fans/regulars only (which is why it’s usually a friendly crowd, at least).

| Re: Booking Tours Yeah, i was thinking about the downside of it not beign in a city. However, i've noticed that sometimes the best gigs can be in little villages that nothin much happens in! I didn't think Durham would put on such a good riot folk show as I saw a couple weeks back - still reeling from it! |

If you aren't already out there on your own no one's going to pick you up, unless you've somehow managed to create a buzz without a lot of touring. Still, taking the step "up" is a double-edged sword because you're leaving a secure environment for an insecure one - folk who saw you at a cool DIY gig for £5 might not be willing to see you in a chain venue for double the door charge and little chance of good support acts, and there's no guarantee that the promoter will be able to foster new interest.
Even being on a respected label doesn't always help. Apparently Coliseum (Relapse Records) played here to about 15 people in December - if ourselves (Glasgow) or CDH (Edinburgh) had put that on that there'd have been double, if not triple, the amount of people there. Thing is, we don't deal with guarantees on principal, but even on a practical level we wouldn't have the money anyway, which is how non-DIY promoters - who often have the P2P to fall back on - always get the foot in there first.
End of the day, I find the DIY thing more appealing. More relaxed at the gigs, plus 99 times out of 100 there's food and a place to stay where you can chat with folk about their local music scene/community, share ideas and aw that. And like I've said before, people follow through out of principle rather than necessity - those who don't won't stick around for long so it polices itself.

Well, I can't remember much but I always like to show bands a "good time".
