For me personally I like to try and find a way of developing a piece of music so that the structure ties in with the lyrical theme or has some interesting dynamic or melodic shift.

I'm not so keen on key changes but trying to change the chord sequence your playing for the second chorus but keeping the melody the same is a fun one.

I sometimes try and think of something that sounds like a cliche but hasn't been used before. If you know what I mean. Something that has people thinking. I've heard that line before when they haven't.
