Just read a good blog on the Futility of Flogging Music, so I thought I'd bump this thread

Re: Lots of free music from me :)

He gets bit misty-eyed toward the end about musicians being at their best when poor and hungry. It certainly applies to some, but as much as I hate to admit it, the well-off are just as capable of creating outsider art. Think how many brilliant punk bands come from the pampered white upper-middle-class. Harsh reality.

I never really seem to read anything by anyone speaking for my attitude to music, probably makes me quite jaded:

I want to play once a month and make that show the best one anyone in the audience have seen that month. Tours and albums are things that happen maybe every three years, any more than that and you're just writing about playing in a band and making albums. I don't expect a wage from any of this, though I shouldn't be having to buy my own beer at gigs. Conventional promotion is ineffective for most of the music I make, and anyway, accosting an unsuspecting audience is probably the most fun a human being can have with a musical instrument. I can see benefits and drawbacks in every system from DIY to pay-to-play, but don't personally subscribe to any one set method. If someone as antisocial as me can sell hundreds of copies of one EP over a six week period while playing three shows...

I figure I'm onto something, but I'm not that bothered if I'm not.
