| Re: Hammershaw Split cassette out August The aesthetic (and to some extent, nostalgic) qualities of tapes are greatly outweighed by the fact that you might as well release your music on wax cylinder, in terms of practicality.

| Re: Hammershaw Split cassette out August cassette tapes are a horrible format. i spent hundreds of pounds on one of the best machines you could buy (manual calibration, external power supply, etc) back when the technology was more relevant but i can't see releasing music on them now as anything but wanky.
i can accept the low fidelity of the format (even on metal tape, which pre-recorded releases rarely were!) - the music is more important than the reproduction etc and okay you might wanna make some kinda point out of that.
i can accept that inhibiting the ease with which a remote-controlled CD player can be commanded to skip through tracks - perhaps there's some reason you'd wanna encourage people to listen through each side in order (though you could just make a CD with one long track to accomplish that)
arguably it might reduce piracy due to the increased effort to rip, though it never stopped piracy when it was the predominant format...
but the limited lifespan and ease of destruction of the tape, and the decreasing prevalence of players makes me think that whatever reasons for clinging to that format just aren't good reasons. i suppose there might be some parallel to be made with vinyl, which i do love. i mean, though 12"s and albums can sound good, 7"s never do. there is something satisfyingly mechanical about the players of both formats... and yes i do cling to OLD things in my choice of cars, hairstyles etc...
but releasing something on only one (comparatively obscure) format just grates with me as putting image in front of music which i find crass and crappy.

| Re: Hammershaw Split cassette out August Got the new Raein release on tape and it sounds amazing, as does the Thou vinyl re-issue on Southern Lord. Funnily enough I got a couple of the Skullflower CD re-issues on Crucial Blast and the sound nowhere near as good as the originals.

| Re: Hammershaw Split cassette out August it's POSSIBLE to get tapes to sound good, it just rarely seems to happen
music that doesn't have much in the way of quiet passages certainly fairs better! good quality tape helps a lot, metal > chrome > ferric, and accurate calibration of the heads helps but most people don't have that facility.
just seems to me there are other technologies that accomplish the goal better of getting the sound made by the band into people's ears in a faithful way.

onto ferric, sounded totally sick. Think it's OOP already though.... |

| Re: Hammershaw Split cassette out August Possible collaboration with Tim C. Holehouse on for November as well which is an honor considering the mans genius. This set is quite legendary now for obvious reasons.

| Re: Hammershaw Split cassette out August I just bought a deck off ebay to back up some important tapes, a Denon that was £170 in '98 for £10. A Nakamichi went for £70 around the same time.
I find this music really difficult to get into, it reminds me of a film I seen ages ago called Hardware, made me feel nauseous. Saying that, if it can cause such an effect it must be powerful. I have heard other stuff like this but there was more notes being played, was more accessible.
This music is like the era just before Anglarna's music? Are you using ancient analogue devices that were meant for other purposes? I take it that's why you're releasing on tape, because it fits the scene?
How old is this style anyway, does it go back to the 50s?
