| The NEW 'what have you been spinning/dancing to' thread Starting a new thread akin to the old ones i started years ago ( this and this) - which were both successful in helping me find new music, and since ive recently discovered spotify - i reckon it'd work even better now: being able to listen to peoples reccomendations immediately rather than hunting for the mp3 to d/l.
Its a different vibe to the sticky on this forum 'what are you listening to right now' - not restricted by genre or anything but still i looked through that sticky thread and it wasnt doing it for me. Not the vibe im going for. Try and say something about the songs your listing, or at least what genre they're in. And if you recognise tunes other people mention and can reccomend back to them with other similar shit they might like then double bonus. Dont want just loads of random posts full of 1 song which nobody ever actually checks out/listens to.
i'll start with a couple.
eh, dancey/upbeat im liking this week are: Feist : My Moon, My man [boyz noize classic remix] (i feel gay for liking feist but this remix makes me feel a bit more manly? ) Coldcut ft. Roots Manuva - True Skool [spank rock remix] (old song but i only found this remix recently, a winner if you like spank rock)
And on a more chilled note ive been digging a folk-ish/country type vibe recently with these: Nikolai Dunger - Last night i dreamt of mississippi (amazing track by swedish songwriter dude, check it out) The Yonder Mountain String Band - To see you coming round the bend (was used in a yoda essential mix and i think is sampled by bubba sparxx? - but its catchy as fuck none the less...if your into yer folk that is. which im not really but hey) Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Nashville Blues (more mad country shit really. good tho. instrumental.)
right thats enough for now. I expect additions from all the usual suspects, poprock, dec, blip, etc. |

| Re: The NEW 'what have you been spinning/dancing to' thread Rustie - Bad Science (sounds like J Dilla doing the music for a boss level on a NES game. Just reissued on the Bad Science EP, get it while you still can)
Damfunk - Toeachizown (Smooth as fuck, sounds like golden age hip hop/rnb with a proper modern slant)
Debruit - I'm Goin Wit U ft Ommas Keith (Loath as I am to use the term "wonky", it's pretty accurate. Definite Outkast and J Dilla influences apparent)
Gemmy - Supligen (Purple as fuck)
Hudson Mohawke - Polkadot Blues or Overnight (Glasgow rules, these are 2 of my favourite tracks from Hudson Heeter's and Polyfolk Dance, instrumental hip hop done great. Album in November!)
Joker & Ginz - Purple City (Purple as fuck, again)
Joker - Digidesign (as above)
DJ F2000 - You Don't Know What Love Is (Somewhere between Joker and that Damfunk track, purple beats and soulful sounds)
Flying Lotus - Riot (Dubby instrumental hip hop, perfect for boogying to or just baking to).

Flying Lotus is the business, me and Thermo went to see him in March when he played with Rustie and Hudson Mohawke, shit was nuts.

| Re: The NEW 'what have you been spinning/dancing to' thread Big Buisness - Mind The Drift
I'm not too sure how to describe Big Buisness, but they are very Melvins influenced. In fact they have joined Melvins as part of the rhythm section. This is third album, first with a full time Guitarist. It's pretty much loud stoner stuff. www.myspace.com/bigbigbusiness Black Lips - 200 Million Thousand
This is Garage rock, has a couple of great pop songs on it, and a few psycadelic jams on it. Not as good as 'Good Bad, Not Evil' but its still pretty damn good.
They have also re done 'The Drop I Hold' with GZA
And they do an Iguanas cover, which was Iggy's band before the stooges.
I would also recommend 'Good Bad, Not Evil' as it has these songs on it.
They are also amazing live, and seem to play glasgow every two months Mark Sultan - The Sultanic Verses
Garage rock Legend has been in bands such as Spaceshits, Les Sexareenos, King Khan & BBQ show, he usually plays under the name BBQ, but this is his first record as Mark Sultan. He always plays guitar and a scaled down kit with his feet, and has a great singing voice. http://www.myspace.com/marksultan
Mortal Man is a beast of a song, his website has mp3's of his other bands that you can download www.marksultan.com/
I would also Recommend King Khan & BBQ show, Soul/R'n'b/Doo Wop done by a two piece Garage rock n roll band. Dillinger 4 - Verses God
Pop punk thats not gay, or sounds like the Ramones, great lyrics, and great riffs, they are playing here in December.
I think 'Midwestern Songs of the Americas' is better, and green day stole a riff from them. The Hellacopters- Grace Of God
Swedish Rock n roll band that split up at the end of last year, they played their first show supporting Kiss, and Nick Royale who sings was the drummer in Entombed, he now plays in Death Breath. Dregan from Backyard Babies also played Guitar for a while.
Hellacopters
'By The Grace Of God'
'Other Albums'
Death Breath
Entombed Pissed Jeans - Hope For Men
Scuzzy Lo Fi punk on Sub pop, influenced by Flipper, Rapeman, Black Flag, Jesus Lizard, Scratch Acid Toys That Kill - Control The Sun
Melodic punk that has members of FYP, Todd C used to be a pro skateboarder in the 80's and now runs Recess records
I love 'The White Lies', 'Runnin The Front' and 'All Dogs Are He's All Cat's Are She's' but I cant find them on youtube http://www.myspace.com/toysthatkill Marked Men - Ghosts
Pop punk band that tends to sound a bit like the Real Kids crossed with the Hives without the hype or posing.
Red light rumors is my fave song on the record. |

| Re: The NEW 'what have you been spinning/dancing to' thread Today I've been listening to O.V. Wright. He's one of my favorite soul singers. His first single was 'That's How Strong My Love Is' and when Otis Redding heard it he decided to cover it. Otis' version became a huge hit right away and even though O.V. recorded many more great singles, he never had the smash hit he deserved...
O.V. Wright has such an incredible voice. It sounds like he just got out of a bar fight which he lost, then calls his girlfriend who tells him his dog died and that she's taking off with his best friend, and then went into the studio with the blood still on his face and the tears in his eyes...
Listen to this: Motherless Child I'm Going Home (To Live With God)
And for those who can't handle heartbroken soul and only like music when it's dancable, O.V. Wright knows to deal with that too: Ace Of Spades Monkey Dog
His albums were never re-released on CD, but anyone who likes soul should buy the compilation 'The Soul Of O.V. Wright' which has the best songs of his early singles on Big Beat, the songs above are on it among many more great ones. There's another comp you come across quite often called 'The Complete O.V. Wright on Hi Records' (which was the label he recorded for after Big Beat) but even if that's not bad it doesn't come close to his early work.
No Youtube clips this time as I got a row. |
