Backup Joy Division they may be, but they sure as hell know how to knock out a song. Speaking of Joy Division, get New Dawn Fades* while you're at it. From the album Turn on the Bright Lights.
| as much as i like life on mars, i'd say to get andy warhol, purely for the silly guitar riff, so you can shout at the tv next time some other pop song uses it. that or oh you pretty things, of which there is a wonderful performance on the 3rd old grey whistle test dvd, and its just another great song , rah.
and i would probably have said nyc or or untitled, because i don't think ALL that highly of obstacle two, though its nice when you're in a bouncy mood.
i'll do something similar later, cause mine would be
'10 songs that seem like a good idea at 5 in the morning' right now. |

I'll have a wee think and do this later, I always feel like a less-knowledgable version of the guy from High Fidelity when these things come up cos I find it so damn hard to choose.

| Re: 10 things everyone should hear in no order. I've not duplicated any artist to try give a more varied list and yes I've missed a fair few out but here's 10 anyway:

5. The Spencer Davis Group "Gimmie' Some Lovin'"
6. Guns 'n Roses "Its So Easy"
7. Nirvana "Drain You"
8. Rancid "Roots Radicals"

| Re: 10 things everyone should hear To be honest there are a fair few songs I'd choose over these ones (The Stooges "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and Le Tigre's "Deceptacon" for sure) but seems pointless mentioning stuff that most folk've already heard. 1. Unida - Last Day
At least I *think* that's what it's called, I downloaded it as such on WinMX but it's not on the album. Cracker of a laid-back desert tune, slightly reminiscent of "Demon Cleaner" 2. Leona Naess - Lazy Days
Was quite disappointed with her album but this is a gem, simplistic and poignant song. 3. The Slits - I Heard It Through The Grapevine
This is what covers SHOULD be like. Never thought it was possible to turn that classic into such a filthy, bass-driven number. 4. Jeff Buckley - Everybody Here Wants You
On a par with "Lover You Shouldve Come Over" Gonna stop with the descriptions now. 5. Mad Season - Long Gone Day
6. Joni Mitchell - A Case of You
7. The Rolling Stones - Rocks Off
8. Dinosaur Jr. - Water
9. Bjork - Immature
10. Jackknife Lee - Toot Sweet Boogie
I'm already unhappy with my choices. Oh well. |

| Re: 10 things everyone should hear I was gonna go all eclectic on yo asses but then realised this stuff here means more to me so THERE YOU GO: Spiritualized - Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space
Jason Pierce does love, drugs and heartbreak like no one else. The Cramps - Garbageman
The most perfect rock'n'roll band of all time scrawl their manifesto out with crayon. The Only Ones - Another Girl, Another Planet
Women and aliens are the same thing. Prince - When Doves Cry
Drama, glamour, lust and fantastic showmanship. Prince is sex. Mansun - Legacy
I miss Mansun so much. Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea
Sums up everything there is to love/loathe about this band. Gorgeous. The Stooges - TV Eye
Or "Sleep Now In The Fire" as Tom Morello would have you think. Even at their most out-there, they can't help but come back to what they do best. Big Black - The Power Of Independent Trucking
Steve hates women almost as much as he hates you. And digital recording. Public Image Ltd. - Lowlife
John Lydon ditches that 'punk' thing and invents The Pixies about ten years early. Oops. The Icarus Line - Caviar
One of the very few dangerous bands left. Cherish them. |

Don't mind some Hole stuff but Courtney Love should be shot for butchering it as she did. |

| Re: 10 things everyone should hear Even the most liberal forum users have transformed into musical fascists for this thread. Okay, I'll play along Carter USM - Prince in a Paupers Grave
Quite simply one of the most beautiful songs ever. No joke. Ministry - So What (live)
The live version of So What from '...In Case you didn't feel like showing up' is the peak of performance from the greatest live industrial act to grace the 1980s (or in fact ever in my opinion). Angry loud, funky, mean, it took 'metal' another ten years to get this heavy. Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band - Big Shot
The epitome of style, or at least the best western culture has to offer. Ben E. king - Stand By Me
Shouldn't have to explain this one Big Black - Kerosene
Anyone with any salt will probably recommend at least one Steve Albini track to you, this is just my favourite. Pop Will Eat Itself - Karmadrome
Very few bands are able to simply slough off the entire idea of genres (though many claim to), the poppies do this all the time and actually seem to be having the most incredible fun doing it. music rarely gets better than this. Sonic Youth - Dirty Boots
Another band who out of their way to be inaccesible and obscure accidentally producing one of the greatest songs ever as they are prone to do on occasion. I think Sonic Youth and Thurston Moore in particular have always made a point of being obnoxious but this is the real shit. Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
Pantera were a fairly revolutionary metal band to me (despite originally being a glam band *snicker*) they really seemed to come about at a time when I having a lot of trouble believing that metal was ever going to evolve beyond the 80s venom/overkill/maiden cheese and that most of the good bands were gone. A stomping dirty, funky, grinding declaration of intent. Still a bit cheesy but that too has its place in the music. Gravediggaz - Diary Of A Madman
Yes, hip-hop can actually be this good. No, there is no excuse for ICP. Weezer - Butterfly
Self-involved and sexist, as all the best love songs are.
Ten is not enough, I could write a hundred.
