| Old school, meet new school A CD guaranteed to raise some hackles this autumn is the soundtrack for the new Tony Hawk game, American Wasteland; it will see early hardcore tracks - apparently chosen by big T "to pay homage to the roots of skateboarding" - covered by currently popular bands.
The tracklisting looks a bit like this: My Chemical Romance – “Astro Zombies” (Misfits) Fall Out Boy – “Start Today” (Gorilla Biscuits) Taking Back Sunday – “Suburban Home” and “I Like Food” (Descendents) Thrice – “Seeing Red” and "Screaming at a Wall” (Minor Threat) Alkaline Trio – “Wash Away (Beneath the Shadows)” (T.S.O.L.) Rise Against – “Fix Me” (Black Flag) Thursday – “Ever Fallen In Love” (Buzzcocks) Dropkick Murphys – “Who is Who” (Adolescents) Saves the Day – “Sonic Reducer” (Dead Boys) Senses Fail – “Institutionalized” (Suicidal Tendencies) From Autumn To Ashes – “Let's Have A War” (Fear) Emanuel – “Search & Destroy” (The Stooges) The Bled – “House of Suffering” (Bad Brains) Hot Snakes – “Time to Escape” (Government Issue)

| Re: Old school, meet new school Aye, new mediocre bands covering really decent songs, no doubt, note for note. I love it when people completely miss the point of doing a cover.

Predictable? Never.

In other words, every other Misfits cover ever recorded (with 13 Ghosts notable exceptions). I like how the choice of bands seems to be designed to piss off any fans of the original bands.
I just noticed The Bled covering House of Suffering, my slight indifference has been escalated to all out rage.
What's the bets that by the time this album drops this emo shit will have died a death? No? Me neither, we can but pray.

I prefer a lot of the tracks on there to the originals... at least each band covered a track in their own style, instead of trying to do Misfits impressions. The Therapy? version of Where Eagles Dare is particularly choice.

Fair play, the only song I've heard off of Violent World is the NOFX cover of Last Caress. You'll know the one that I mean, the one that is only discernable by the obligatory ska breakdown that featured so heavily in the NOFX of the 90s.
I should give mention to Alk3s cover of Halloween though, that is pretty different. The majority of Misfits covers I've heard have been note for note renditions, what's even worse is when singers try and copy Danzig exactly. Eugh.

| Re: Old school, meet new school Offt. Fuck... why would anyone want to emulate Danzig's vocals?
And yeah, you're right about the NOFX track there. The Snapcase and Shades Apart ones are top though, and the Prong track is just bizzarre. Basically, the Earth Crisis song sounds like Earth Crisis, the Pennywise one sounds like Pennywise, and so on. None of this "doing impressions of Mr Danzig" malarkey.

| Re: Old school, meet new school Hell, that doesn't even sound like Therapy?, let alone the Misfits. It sounds like Andy Cairns fronting Rocket from the Crypt. It's bloody fantastic.
