I think some of the music sang by these 'awful singers' suits their type of songs, i.e. Bob Dylan and Neil Young are horrendous singers but it suits the type of music they play.

Re: Kurt Cobain. I wouldn't say he was an awful singer. He wasn't the best granted, but he had a decent voice, a certain quality to it and I think the above also applies to him.
