| To Gig Or Not To Gig??? Having grown mind-numbingly bored of the endless conveyor belt of commercially acceptable bands that the larger concert promoters thrust upon us, I've spent the last coupla months talking to various record companies about getting some electro/industrial bands to venture north of the border.
Now, given the financing required to do this, and that Cryotec and this are pretty much an unprofitable hobby for me at the moment, I need some feedback from my fellow Bedlamites as to whether or not you'd be interested if I went ahead with this.
So, nows your chance to voice your opinions...
What bands would you like to see?
How much would you be willing to pay for tickets?
What venues wiuld you like to see used?
Would you be willing to travel to Edinburgh, or would it have to be Glasgow based?
Any other comments?
Cheers eveyone |

| Re: To Gig Or Not To Gig??? Bands like to see -
Icon of Coil
Combichrist
Dulce Luquido
Neikka rpm
5f_55
Razed in Black
Galan Pixs
S.P.O.C.K
Lab 4
Stromkern
Colony 5
Gridlock
Venues -
The Cathouse is a good venue although I'm not sure about a club night afterwards unless it's 213, also King tuts, QM..etc etc.
I don't mind travelling through to Edinburgh and usually do if there are good bands on but usually find there are a hardcore of us that do but not as many as there could be
£5 would be ok price but the carrot of after gig entertainment is usually a good one
It's the whole numbers of gig-goers for this type of music in ratio to bringing a bands over from the continent, are the numbers in Glasgow really going to be profitable or make you break even in the light of what the bands demands are?
Maybe a VNV, Covenant, or Apop could bring enough numbers (as well as a hefty appearance fee), but I think on the whole they see playing the festivals where the big money is & best suited environment for them
Would be good to see a few good bands in town though so if you're feeling brave then I for one would suport

| Re: To Gig Or Not To Gig??? the big problem is venue size versus how many folk you think will come versus how much it costs to get the bands over. we filled the 13th Note for the Detritus/SBC gig and only just covered our costs because the bands were doing for the cost of travel and food/accomodation. even then it was because they both happened to come from areas serviced by budget airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet.
it's a tricky balancing act, best of luck.

| Re: To Gig Or Not To Gig??? I'd like some INDUSTRIAL not bleep... no VNV, no Apoptygma, no Covenant... none of that one chord on an arpegiator, anyone can do it with the technology, garbage.
I know this stuff doesn't come very often here but either does propper industial.
But then I guess the chance of you getting Das Ich, KMFDM, Front 242, Front Line Assembly, Skinny Puppy, Razed In Black, Wumpscut [don't tour], etc. are very low.
I'm sure JLA would be happy to do gigs...
Why don't you try and get those bands that you can get (including those I don't like but others have mentioned) to play at a night like Cryotec or Bedlam... they could pay their set, then you could play tracks as normal. |

i'm actually struggling to think of bands that i really like that would appeal to patrons of Bedlam... uhhh.. maybe Haujobb and Snog. and i wouldn't complain about Skinny Puppy either. i don't know if Forma Tadre, Mentallo or Index would ever make it out of retirement which is a pity. that could've been cool.

| Re: To Gig Or Not To Gig??? Was talking to Brian at Bedlam, hes got a point about trying to get gigs at club nights. He says that say 70 people come to your club night then you can automatically cancel about 40 of them out cause they wont like the live bands playing.
Its a hard mix trying to get bands playing at a club night, maybe best just making a seperate night out for a band.

| Re: To Gig Or Not To Gig??? The biggest problem I've had so far has been the old chestnut of 'outlay vs attendance'. Like most of you have said, the problem is that a lot of these bands have comparatively small fan bases. So just cause someone goes to Bedlam or Cryotec, it doesn't mean they'll turn out to support a live night. The plan has been to try and aim for smaller venues such as Barfly, where we could run the gig and a club together. This of course means less well known bands, lower attendance, there's a whole vicious circle thing going on there!
I'd love to put on some of the bigger name acts, but we need to start off with more financially viable gigs. Hopefully if they're a success the money can be put into funding something larger scale.
As a couple of you know, I was offered Icon Of Coil for a Glasgow gig as part of their current European tour, and we even got to the stage of receiving contracts from their record company. But for a number of reasons we had to back out. The costs were running into £3000 - £4000, and when we saw the technical requirements for lighting and sound, it started looking like the only venue that could deal with their demands was the Carling Academy (and they were already booked out on the date we were offered).
Anyway like I say, the plan is to start out with some smaller names and hopefully if they're successful we can bring in some bigger acts in the future.
Cheers for all the feedback guys |

Why can't industrial bands just be consistantly good?
I mean, Wumpscut is a perfect example, some of the stuff on Music For A Slaughtering Tribe is fuckin' A.... then Embryodead is just... pretty fucking bleak
man, I wish I had the hardware and sooftware I want... the world would see |
