Tour diary - Huddersfield

Posted 6th March 2008 at 12:57pm by DoNotResus
We left Manchester around 6pm to get to Huddersfield, but traffic meant we didn't get to the place till around 7.20 or so. Bar and Jacs welcomed in to their house which was to be the venue for the gig in a little ex-Milling town called Milnsbridge. We were fed a lovely vegetable stew and generally made to feel at home. After a short tour of the house, it used to be a pub and as such had a beer cellar which Bar had converted in to a recording studio (and home brew factory!), people started to arrive around 8pm.

The gig was underway around 9pm, with Jacs acting as host and MC for the night, and Bar playing a short set to kick things off. He played great leftish story telling songs with an Irish tinge in his voice (even though he's from dan saff - I think).

By the time it was my turn, there were about 15-20 people in the living room for the gig, all enjoying Bar's homebrew (myself and Al included). Jacs introduced me and I started.

For the first time in any of my playing, I did the whole set sitting down on a wee stool. It was really relaxed, with the audience silently paying full attention to everything, with the right amount of banter and humour between the songs. To mark this occasion, I played "Live off the dead" for the first time ever, and also Malaga Airport (Hadn't played it this year yet).

Setlist:
Never took the time, On Our Own, Daddy fought the law, A thousand words, Malaga Airport, First step to failure, Live off the dead, Boycott Me (Erik Petersen cover).

This was also the first gig in which I didn't play Once we were punks, felt pretty strange!

After I finished my set, there was a 15 minute smokers break, drinks refill and virtual raffle. Virtual in that people just had to think of a colour (green or orange) and a number (between 1 and 10), then Jacs would call out a combination and the winner owns up. However, people were too honest about the numbers they had chosen, with most picking Green and seven - i'm sure there's some statistics/human behaviour thing going on there.

Al then played his set which as usual was brilliant, he was however noticing the home brew taking effect rather fast during it!

After Al had finished, people started buying CD's and chatting with us. Which was great, I've never sold so many copies as I did last night in the one night - probably helped that Al I were selling a bundle of the two of our CD's for a fiver! In the end we both covered our costs and got some cash for our troubles.

The night then descended into a massive folk jam session, can't remember much but there were guitars, flutes, bodhrans, tambourines and multiple empty bottles of home brew. Songs I can remember being played include me and Al duetting on The River and Atlantic City (both by springsteen), Thatcher fucked the kids (Frank Turner), and To have and to have not (B. Bragg). Then Al did Jolene (D. Parton!), Bar and Jacs did Black is the colour of my true loves hair (Donovan), and countless other Bragg songs by everyone. Later on I found myself singing along to COmmon People with Bar, and then doing Disco 2000, before we called it a night.

This was a totally awesome gig and major kudos go to Bar and Jacs for setting it up, and all their neighbours and friends for coming along.

Woke up the next morning and headed back to Manchester and had breakfast in a great little cafe called Fuel, while playing with Phun.

Its the UnderThePavement Radio show tonight from 11 till 1am, which should be great, you can listen at www.allfm.org
