Still hurting

Posted 22nd September 2007 at 5:41pm by Hevs
Well its been lots of weeks since my accident and I am still on the mend. My initial skin graft didn't take so they took me back into hospital and did what is medically termed as a scalp rotation and yeah, it is exactly that. They took a piece of my scalp from the back my my head and rotated it to the front of my head, then they added 50 odd staples and 20 stitches to it. On the plus side I was taken into Rosshall on private medical this time, so I had the pleasure of having Sky TV, lovely food and tea on demand so it was at least a pleasant stay. Plus they gave me morphine which was bloody good stuff. They gave me a little button to push anytime I needed a top up. I spent 24 hours waking up, pushing the button and passing out again.

They took the staples and stitches out 2 weeks ago and that has by far, been the most painful procedure in this while saga. Having 50 staple yanked out of your scalp is bloody sore. I cried like a baby of course and swore quite a lot too. I have another skin graft on the back of my head now, so that is two chunks off my leg, which then went and got infected and would not heal. But its healing up ok now. In fact one of them has completely healed now \o/

So, Im healing up nicely. I have a lovely scar right across my forehead which will fade given time. I now have to go back to hospital to get the "dog ear" removed. Yup that is an actual medical term, and describes the twisted piece of skin on the left side of my scalp that is left over from rotating the scalp. It was biggish when I came home from hospital but covered by my hair so it didn't bother me too much. It is shrinking daily now though so once its got as small as its going to get they will cut it off and give me some more stitches.

Once everything is healed and no longer causing pain and annoyance (my head is constantly sore and itchy) they will then give me Scalp Extension surgery. Apparently, this is frequently used as a plastic surgery procedure on men with receding hairline issues. They will basically insert some balloon like devices under my scalp and inflate them over a number of weeks which will stretch my scalp and give them enough hair bearing skin to cover my skin graft on the back of my head, leaving me with a full head of hair and no baldy bits I will no doubt look like the fucking Elephant Man for 8 weeks and will refuse to leave the house. It will be worth it though once everything is done as I will look relatively normal. At the moment my head looks plain silly and because I have had hair cut and shaved during surgery, I look like I have done a semi Britney Spears but fuck it, it's only hair and it will grow back.

I was speaking to someone who had an accident with her horse who came out of it much worse than me. She was hacking out and her horse spooked, she fell off and he galloped over the top of her causing her ribs to break, puncture her lungs and damage her spleen. She came so close to dying but she has pulled through so we are keeping each other company online while we both recuperate as neither of us can ride at the moment.

My mum told me a few weeks ago that when she saw me in the hospital she thought I was going to die and the doctors put her and Kev in the family room so she thought they were going to tell her I was dead. That's apparently how bad it was but obviously it wasn't as bad as it looked, because a few hours later I was yelling at Kev to order me pizza, or so I am told because I have no recollection of the first 24 hours after the accident.

Well, at least I had my priorities in order

See! Even near death and crazy surgery stuff doesn't stall someone when in pursuit of pizza .
