Hopefully this will make us both step up our game and benefit both clubs and their customers. | You could be a football pundit with your ability to sit on a fence like that

| Re: Free Entry Every Thursday To Everyone I think it's easy to over-think all this stuff. A club is just a room with a bar and some music. It's pretty hard to fault the Cathouse in those terms; it has a bar and music, job done. If you like the music, and can afford the drinks, go; if you don't or can't, don't go...
Honestly despite all the complaints we read on here I think the cathouse, despite having had only slight competition to keep it focussed, seems to be a pretty good rock club (well I've barely been there in the last deacde, but from what I have seen!) - from what I know of Barry, Billy, Dec and Martin at any rate they seem to get the music as good as can be expected given they have to please a lot of different people. Drinks prices? Well, they've never seemed outrageous, quite the reverse.
Where it seems to struggle sometimes is in the other aspects beyond just the basics of trading; the whole "is-it-or-isn't-it-a-hallowe'en-costume" thing; free-entry-or-not-or-maybe with pocket pages at certain times on certain days... that became unclear, or whatever.
This seems like a good example of that problem area. "We're open, it's three quid in, beer's cheap" would be a reasonable proposition and would stand or fail on its own merits; "we're vigorously competing with our new competitors even though there's complicated issues surrounding personalities and the whole scene" is just putting fuel underneath themselves and handing out matches as far as I can see - what objectively is a good deal (free entry, free drink - whoopee!) is, in this context, just inviting people to see it as desperation - which translates as concerns about attendance, and no-one wants to be at any empty club, so this seems counterproductive to me, encouraging people to view the Cathouse as somewhere people would only choose to go to if handed a very good reason to do so.
I truly hope Glasgow has a big enough alternative community to support more than one venue doing rock nights; this should be a wake up call to CPL to try to help expand the market by offering good quality, varied products... and promoting them appropriately, not just cling to a piece of an existing one by resorting to dubious measures like free drinks, In My Humble Opinion.

If you don't like something, then don't go. If you want to change something, drop the folk that run the club night a polite email and express your concern. Whinging on the internet generally makes people look like morons. |

| Re: Free Entry Every Thursday To Everyone altnation@bamboo must be doing something right when a thursday thread is 34 pages long before the night's even taken place. Bamboo's initial successful few months suggests this is not a flash-in-the-pan clubnight. it will have a degree of longevity as it has the ability to appeal to the usual cathouse clan, whilst also making room for the normal clientele of Bamboo. And this is something which the cathouse must be well aware of - it must be hurting for them to resort to desperate measures like this. |

A thread about the AltNation night being popular on the official AltNation forum should be a given, I'd say. The Cathouse used to have HUGE threads about its nights as well, back when it had its own official forum. The official Cathouse forum which, ironically, was the ugly duckling of a forum that would one day grow into the deformed scabby swan of a forum now known as AltNation. |

Any private sector market needs competition to ensure that the best products and services are provided to customers. If there's no incentive for a business to up its game, why should it? From the perspective the Cathouse is damn lucky in having had so little competition - AltNation has only just started, but the gap it (seemingly successfully) exploits has been there, unattended to, for years.
What the Cathouse cannot afford to do is act as if the alternative club night market was its own by rights, and get scared and desperate at the first sign of any trouble. The way this promotion is going, and similarly in December, is demonstrative exactly that (wrong) attitude.
What they should be doing is thinking "right, there's another club night on the go which is attracting our business. What are they doing right that we're doing wrong, and what are they not doing that we could be doing that would get them back?" And to do that they need to look beyond free entry and free drinks promos, and also try - hard though it may be - to ignore the fact that its their own former employees who are running the competition. It's not like this is the first case in history of an employee breaking away to set up a rival firm in the same industry. They are competition like any other.
Of course, brand loyalty is a factor. Personally, it's not something I particularly have. I genuinely like the Cathouse and the majority of its nights, but if something comes along that's better I'll leave without a second thought. I don't owe it anything just because I'm a regular, just as I don't owe Forbes anything because I'm a regular on this site. People music and atmosphere are the 3 things I judge a night on (prices don't mean anything to me, I drink Morgans which is almost always the most expensive single spirit on the menu) and generally nothing more.
But I accept that many people are loyal to Forbes, or to Barry or to Dec, just as others are to Billy, Nicola, Martin etc. Obviously it makes things more complicated for the Cathouse. But it's something they have to put aside if they can, and fight for the business on the merits of what constitutes a good club night.
