Chevy and the Chasers open up this week’s New-Clear Sounds with lots of fast guitars and banging drums. The last time I saw the band play was at a gig in Bloc last year and I have to say they’ve improved a great deal with a much tighter, slicker set. Think Motorhead meets MC5 and you’ve got some idea of the sound they create. Chevy et al have quite a Detroit Rock vibe about them and they produce a fast frantic energy as they power through their set. The songs are not overly long and the sparse lyrics are pinioned between barrages of nifty guitar work, or as my DJ friends call it ‘fret wanking’. Still it’s all to the good and although there’s a big chunk of my notes I can’t read (it was quite dark and I write in a scrawl at the best of times), it was a good set. Lead singer/guitarist Rob wins ‘Best Quote of the Night’ with “Got half way through that song and realised I fucking hate it!” Now with that sort of honesty from the band you can’t go wrong.
Thanks to the lovely people at Live Music Direct.
Kinda strange cos we were total dicks to them that night.
