| Re: Tonights Evening Times - Absolution double page spread. I read a brilliant interview with him last year, where he talked about being bankrupt and unable to accept payment for any gigs/press/etc because the receivers would just take it straight off him. Came across a really nice chap, if still utterly mental.

Let them eat cake and boogie to choons! | I specifically made sure NOT to say anything about "confirming to what is expected at a rock club", by the way, so do not quote one of my posts to accompany your dribblings ever again. Because I would have liked Absolution to be presented as something different from every other club in Glasgow, you seem to have erroneously assumed that I meant "it should be presented as a rock club". This is a hideous distortion of what I am trying to say, please do not attempt to interpret my posts ever again. Quote:

It's not a big a deal as this thread is making it out to be, but I just don't think Absolution's identity is portrayed very well in the piece. That identity, by the way, is a little more interesting and varied than "a bunch of mad goths full stop", so if it was just a bunch of guys with long hair, bullrings and Venom t-shirts I STILL wouldn't think it was on the money.
The main thing is that this is free publicity, and that's good for the health of the club any way you slice it. Although, of course, publicity that presents Absolution as being "every other club in Glasgow" has a slight chance of pulling in even more of these generic ass punters... The potential increased profit from this new audience may increase the chances of the club's look, playlists and general atmosphere changing to satisfy this new crowd, thus leading to the death of Glasgow's new alternative clubbing hope and sending everyone who currently loves the club running back to the Cathouse on their hands and knees.
But I'm sure Barry won't let that happen. Forbes, maybe, but not Barry!

But I'm sure Barry won't let that happen. Forbes, maybe, but not Barry! | If I was in it only for the money, I'd be doing something else . So no me and Barry already talked right at the start about our vision of what we wanted, on a Friday and Saturday were a rock club, we'll play the shit that doesn't get played in other venues, if you want an RnB/Hip Hop hour theres another club you should go to, and at the same time we'll do what we can to support the rock scene.
We know some people won't like what we do but others will hopefully love it.

Ahem.
I think Pete was saying last night that it's a very accurate representation of Dec's floor, but it'll be a bit of a shock if people read this article then go upstairs and see an utterly different picture. I recall one of my friends recounting her first impression of Absolution. She turned up early and was confronted by nothing but guys with knee-length hair air-guitaring in the middle of an empty floor. Had she waited around long enough before hiding downstairs, she would have seen Goth Squad coming out for the industrial bit, Stuart flailing about to... something and then a SEA OF CORSETTED, EYELINERED AND BAND-SHIRTED HUMANITY take to the floor for the rest of the night. A little bit different to downstairs. PR-wise, though, well done guys, as always. The Evening Times might want to take note of your 'biggest rock club in Scotland' status, mind.

I fear my thinking out loud has cast a bit of a negative shadow over my opinion of the article, by the way. Overall, it's still a good thing that something I have more or less watched grow from a small internet community to "arguably" the most popular rock night in Scotland is getting some attention! Upstairs is given a bit of a cringeworthy "GENERIC ROCK CLUB" whitewash ("it's as if haircuts never happened", "not a white garment in sight", etc.), but the fact that upstairs rocks a bit harder IS covered at least.
