I'll be honest - it always struck me as the job of the club to correlate the flyer with the actual music being played, as this is usually the sign of a good club - give the client what they have been led to expect?
Anyway - the flyer seemed quite industrial/gothic, not emo/indie/punk, so I expected the music to be industrial/gothic. Which, when I was there, it wasn't.
Like I said, i'm in no way insulting the DJ or any DJ that has ever worked there, but what i'm saying is the music sounded pretty bad due to the expectations created by the flyer, as, like I said, me and my mate both expected something heavier than emo/indie, and this is what was playing for the time we were in there (it was probably longer than 15 minutes btw, as my mate is a slow drinker lol).
I think you're slightly missing the point - regardless of whether or not you know the DJ (and i'm sure he's a great guy), you need to see by that and see it from a business perspective i.e. getting people in the door and keeping them there. I came in the door as I expected some heavy stuff in the styles I mentioned, but the music turned out to be lighter that what was expected. So we left. The flyer would have been fine if it implied the music that was being played there, which was, like I said, more emo/indie/punk (when I was there anyway)
Most people who pay to get in somewhere will stay there, as they have paid to get in, so I understand the issue. Make it free to get more folk in, which is fair enough. But misleading the client just puts them off, and won't encourage them to go back. Neither do threads from people who i'm assuming are some of the regulars there telling someone who took the time to pop in with their mate and check it out that they are 'talking mince'. Dangerous ground, as a place relies on reputation.
But i'm not a child, and probably will go back to give it another go. And stay for longer this time lol.
I'm all for anything to do with altnation being a success btw, so don't think i'm raining on anyone's parade here. Like I said, I went in with the intention of having a good night, and with the intention of staying. As you do when you go into a club. | Cheers for the feedback, Think that's the devil/angel flyer your talking about, cartoon style. Personally I think the art styles quite pop punk but the names is certainly heavier sounding.
We do go from very heavy "death metal" "industrial" at the start (around 10.30) but as the night progresses it will move to a slightly lighter more main stream rock/metal. Unfortunately it's the nature of the beast that the more extreme genres don't go down as well with the majority but they will still crop up though out the night and all the DJ's are very receptive to request, they will also tell you if something won't get played which I know some DJ's aren't so honest about .
Downstairs on the other hand is a emo/hardcore/punk/indie tunes and I'm guessing that you perhaps missed the top floor if you only heard that style of music, though I could be wrong.
Hopefully see you back to give it another shot. If your not keen on what your hearing ask for something you might be surprised at the answer.

My mate, who occasionally listens to heavy stuff, said when handed the flyer: 'Damnation? sounds heavy as hell. Let's go see what it's like'. He was annoyed when he walked in because of what he (and to an extent myself) came to expect.
Is the title a play on words because of the altnation involvement? If so, then it seems more of an 'in' joke, as the only people who will get it are those who know about altnation (and they will know of what is played there that night anyway, so it seems pointless if the title is meant to be a pun), whereas everyone else who sees it who doesn't know of altnation (i.e. my mate, and probably most folk who get handed the flyer i'd presume?) will just think of it purely as a title that implies what type of things will be on that night (as he did). 'Damnation', as in being sent to hell/banished from heaven, implied super dark music and a general heaviness/darkness/edginess that would be hard to find in most other places in Glasgow. Hence we went along to check it out.
I also didn't realise until I saw the flyer that it's an active involvement with altnation ('altnation presents' at the top of the flyer, if I remember right?) - that's another reason why I went along. Even though most of my posts here end up with me arguing with people lol. Quote:

Didn't realise there were two levels!! haha. so my apologies for that. If we knew we probably would have stayed! But my mate was pissed at thinking it was going to be super heavy, then walking in and hearing lighter stuff, so wanted to head.
Maybe that's something that could be obviously marked on the flyer i.e. a split-design flyer or something (i.e. 'floor 1 - emo; floor 2 - industrial' or whatever?)? Or maybe I just walk around with my head in the sand lol If it did mention the two levels on the flyer, then maybe it should be made more prominent, as with me and my mate (as with most people i'm assuming), we looked at the image, looked at the title, and said 'yeah let's give it a go'.
I'll be back, but being from the shire, it could be a couple of weeks or so
Cheers guys. Like I said, no harm intended. Just giving a first impression of the place as I hadn't been before, and wouldn't have known about it if I wasn't handed the flyer in the first place.
Now i'm curious - what's altnation's involvement with the friday night thing at the Classic Grand?
RE my night out - I was up at Jongleurs with my mate, then we drove down to Union street and I parked there. That's when I got handed the flyer and decided to go along. We were going to go to the casino just round the corner after Jongleurs, but on driving down through the town the place looked pretty busy, so we thought we'd go out and maybe go into a pub for one or two before going along (I was on the soft drinks lol as I had to drive home), then got handed the flyer, and said that we could always just go to the casino once Classic Grand closed shop for the night, and that we would go check it out.
A lot of the folk I know down this way know of the Cathouse and not much else (probably because of the under-18 thing the Cathouse puts on, and a lot of the younger ones go up to that, then I suppose it's natural to go to the over-18's once of age, as most people will stick with what they know), so i'll let them know they can always go to the Classic Grand instead, which is just down the road. |

There is no direct link and Damnation is no sort of play-on-words on AltNation.
(Most folk are stuck arguing the big themes and tend to miss the little questions.) |

Like I said, it wasn't what I expected. the music was, IMO, bad, not because it was bad music, but because it was out of context with what was expected, and expectations were created from the flyer I was given, as this is all I (and anyone else who has never been before) can go on.
Is this another case of ganging up because someone states their opinion?
Over and out. I'm not getting involved in an argument when all i'm saying is that it wasn't what was expected. And my mate thought the same thing. | Nah, I just genuinely wanted to know what kind of music you like, as most people I know who are into any 'alternative' music are catered for in some way in the CG.

it's never once worked, trying to explain that to people.

| Re: Free Friday - Times are tough I mind me and my mate Dave got chatting to a couple of lassies in the Solid and they said they liked Metallica, Slayer and all that pish me and Dave don't like but they were cute so we told them to go to Classic and we'd get them when we finished work and they stayed downstairs the whole time thinking it was shite til we got there.
Does the flyer point out there's two floors? Maybe you should have a sign up by the cloakroom saying "punk/emo/naive girls" and point to Dec's room and "metal/rock/beards" and point upstairs
