Question Dundee Goth/industrial Scene problems...

The Goth/Industrial scene in dundee seems to have shrunk a bit in the last year or two so without proper support this genre could disappear from Dundee. We were only 2 people over minimum numbers on friday and due to increased costs of bouncers due to vandalism we are starting to struggle a bit.
I've managed to keep this going for 6 years now and hopefully we will be around for quite a bit longer but its basically down to whether people in the scene really want a local industrial/goth club they can go to.
If we can't bump up numbers the club won't be too happy and the inevitable may happen....

So here's the chance to air your feelings about SiN and the general dundee scene and maybe put up a few suggestions on how things could be better.

Anyone fancy a militant convert and recruit campaign?

Re: Dundee Goth/industrial Scene problems...

ok, i'll attempt to distill a few of my thoughts on this subject into something tangible and succinct.

i think that my main thought on this is that Sin is mostly based on having a key audience which you need to augment with people outwith that target demogrpahic. and this is exacerbated to some extent because those key punters you want to target are probably quite splintered in their personal preferences. mostly because the industrial and goth scene itself has become so fractured themselves.

i think that the trick is to provide enough variety to keep that integral audience happy without scaring off the passing traffic. also, keeping that audience happy is about providing continuity through the night. i know that i personally find the music played to be most agreeable at the beginning of the night but there is not so much to keep me interested the rest of the evening. an example of how you might approach would be to ensure that there is a relatively even spread of genres through the night. what i mean is that if you know that a reasonable number of people like hearing noise/ant-zen-ish stuff (as an example) try to avoid having a couple of chunks at either end of the night in order that the more pallatable sounds are in the busy part of the night and instead sprinkle the tracks through-out the night so that fans of that won't be sat for ages hoping "for something decent". aye so anyway, thats just one idea and it's not necessarily a goer as such. just trying to offer up some ideas as to how you can ensure that people view the night as a whole as being something cool to go along to.

another aspect that i think has potential is the "i can't believe it's not industrial" section but if i'm honest i'll have to say that i think it falls way short of that potential. to my mind this section should be about trying new things that are ball-park to the industrial-goth scene or that you think people from that scene would enjoy. to prove some spice of variety. i reckon that i'm probably someone that should be most excited about that section as i have a real big appetite for new music and i can think of a good few others (but i'll refrain from naming names) but there really is too much repitition here. how many.....

Re: Dundee Goth/industrial Scene problems...

...times have i heard Clicks Per Second played there, or that Tarmvred song? i recall almost going demented when i was more regular attendee about how often that Silk Saw remix of Ammo got played.

in ways, i recall when i was younger when i first started going to industrial clubs (Brutal Deluxe and Room213 in Glasgow) and the big thrill was going along and getting to hear loads of cool, exciting new music. or stuff that you didn't expect to hear in a club but that sounded so kick-ass. to me, the "i can't believe it's industrial" section should be about providing that thrill people.

anyway, another central idea is that if you can sort the issues that regulars have and get some kind of lust for the club... where people look forward to it for it's merits not because its all they have, then i think that in time you'll build the numbers up. as people hear about it being a good night and coming along and enjoying the atmosphere. having a boogie. so on and so forth.

i'll stop rambling now. i've went on so long i've had to span this over two posts. i am curious to hear what other people think.... is there anyone else out there in this electronic void?

Re: Dundee Goth/industrial Scene problems...

I've been coming along (on and off) for the last few years.
Heard of it through word of mouth, then found this site...
Apart from that I've not seen much in the way of advertising around Dundee.
Spreading via people in the know is a good way to maintain a loyal fanbase, but won't get much new blood through the door.
More flyers, maybe target students via the student unions (spam them silly).
Of course this may attract the Slipknob lot aswell, but its the price you'll have to pay to get punters through the doors. (and at least they won't come back, when you don't play there shit)
You could always do trawl of a few likely pubs pre Sin with flyers to try and bump up numbers.

Advertise.. get posters out.. how many people dunno sin even exists?

Think of all those sad lonely goths, sitting on their pc, listening to wumpscut.. not knowing there's a place out there for them.. cause sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name.. and you're always glad you came. You wunna be where you can see, our troubles are all the same... er yeah lol.
( just erm... don't do what cage did and attract trendier franz ferdawhatsit fans =/ )

Re: Dundee Goth/industrial Scene problems...

I must agree with th sentiments above. I've not beenin Dundee for a year now, but any events or venues within this scene arent well known. Unless youre a regular or a friend of a regular you wont know Sin or Cage exsists - Its an unknown force in Dundee.

I've spending a lot of time since I left involved in some small part in promoting in a niche market (and promoting for commercial clubs when I was still in Dundee) woring and I've realised how important it truly is. Most advertising for non-commercial stuff was done by shitty little flyers handed out by emo kids with an attitude problem or a tear in their eye - and they only ever handed flyers out to people in New Rocks and forgetting that the audience extends beyond the obvious.

You dont just need to promote, you need to promote in style and promote in force, noticable eye catching posters, people flyering more than just people in leathers ad new rocks - theres a lot ore to your audience than that, yet thats all I ever saw anything being pshed towards.

If this doesnt make sense... bah! I'm tired, but I think I know what I mean.
Now bed calls....

hear hear about the lack of adversiting. matt; all you need to do is hand in a4 posters to the council to get them up on the boards in town for free. pop a couple of posts in the appropriate forums on ugs which is where the majority of dundee peeps hang out. also, flyers in obvious places like grouchos, etc, and post in the altdundee community on lj

Re: Dundee Goth/industrial Scene problems...

Hi milk, there are fliers in gouchos and a few other places and up until a few months back i always handed in posters to the council, but it never had any affect on SiN's numbers. We also do quite a lot of web advertising and email lists. I don't currently use LJ so if your volunteering to post up there for me that would be great, thanks!
I'm considering paying for one of the big A0 poster tower thingies kicking around town which might be better.
I think (as has been mentioned) the venue itself is still unknown to many and it is a very people who know people kind of place. It's not exactly the easiest place to find and even if you find it you would just think it was a strip club. Doug has been on about getting banners for the front for a while now which would definitely be a benefit.

Re: Dundee Goth/industrial Scene problems...

Yeah I wish doug would pull his finger out more. There is no sign whatsoever to show people where the venue is. I'm sure brian wouldnt mind a Cage/Sin etc banner somewhere on his building.

Re: Dundee Goth/industrial Scene problems...

Well i'm moving to dundee tomorrow and what I do know is that I wanna hit a goth club so i'm gonna go looking for it, i reckon the problem is that there aren't many goths in the area, which is kinda stupid considering the fact that there are 2 uni's in town. I want to help though so i'm gonna start a thread for dundee goths where people get to know each other and then when we wanna meet we'll go to sin and introduce ourselves, I can also advertise via the student email system so word of mouth spreads quickly. I don't know about anyone else but I would be pissed if sin's doors were closed before i got a chance to enjoy it, anyone else feel me?
