| Re: Reviews/ news Reviews, sure.
News, not so much - everyone with an interest in comics no doubt subscribes to on-line news providers etc already. |

True but I'd probably not venture beyond silly little nuggets like Gene Simmons |

| Re: Reviews/ news I just normally stick up my reviews (And fervently-foaming-at-the-mouth recommendations) as threads in comics, but I've said for a while that more folk should do reviews.
Reminding me about the existence of Dominatrix does not count by the way. |

| Re: Reviews/ news How's this getting on btw? I've read quite a bit of stuff that I'd like to comment on. I take it a reviews thread would include spoilers.

Punisher: Barracuda (issues 31-36)
Written Garth Ennis
Pencilled by Goran Parlov
Marvel Max
This is the first Marvel Max Trade I read. Being A vertigo snob, I was initially unencouraged by Marvel’s failure to experiment with their imprint for mature readers and pretty much wrote off any Marvel brand that didn’t have an X in the title after the disaster that was Epic a few years back. Judgemental as I am, I gave the Punisher a chance because I thought if there’s one marvel character whose book would benefit from swearing, shagging and graphic bodily mutilation (not simultaneously) more than Dazzler it was the Punisher. I was curious when I read the blurb of Barracuda which tells us that in the crosshair this week is “a band of corporate scum”(Rich coming from Marvel, mibbe their filler guy has a sense of humour) Set around Florida, I equated this to Frank Castle goes to Vice City. It may not have VROCK or Lance Vance but it’s hard to see how the formula can go wrong. True to form the action shifts from NY to Florida soon enough and Frank Castle is going toe to toe with a baddie by the name of Barracuda who thankfully isn’t an enemy of Sub-Mariner and is involved in some typically Ennis style confrontations.
Garth Ennis is a writer that I do have to be in the mood for. Being a veteran of the Preacher and Authority: Kev series, it’s just as well I was in the mood for some witty quips and poor bastards getting mutilated in increasingly imaginative and hilarious ways because that’s what you get. This book delivers that much. I can’t say I was bowled over by the artwork but none of it was what you’d call off putting. There’s a tendency for editors to pair Ennis off with Steve Dillon style pencillers and it may not be audacious but it certainly pays off.
While it’s what’s inside that counts Tim Bradstreets covers deserve a special mention. If you haven’t seen them yet then you’re in for a treat. I like everything about them: the proportions, the shading, the textures, the colouring, the whole shebang. For me at least, Bradstreet’s iterpretation of the punisher is he definitive one.
All in all it’s fair to say I enjoyed Barracuda. I wasn’t expecting a prosaic masterwork like Maus or The Sandman which is just as well as it was never on the menu. What was on offer and what you get instead is Punisher: vice City with no time wasted looking for secret packages or insane jumps.

I want to amass enough stuff that it's regular and not my usual dribble then nothing for ages. |
