Political Comics

I'm aware of Captain America (Im looking for ones which were created at the time of war efforts), could you guys tell me any more? Its not a huge part of my essay but it could be kinda useful.

When Im googling it, it only brings me up actual politcal comics, which isnt so much what Im looking for.

Ta.

Re: Political Comics

Maybe try patriotic comics searches instead:

Archie Comics had The Shield
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shield_%28Archie_Comics%29 and there was also
Uncle Sam http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncle_Sam_%28comics%29

British comics had tons of war type heroes too but I'm talking from the 60s onwards.

Re: Political Comics

The Victor was a pretty big British war propaganda type comic. Lots of tales of derring-do, noble spitfire pilots bagging a few hun and all that. It got the can around about 1960.

In fact, a lot of DC Tompson's comics did the anti-Nazi bit a-la Walt Disney etc. I remember Hen and Joe Broon both signed up and the lassies from the Broons were all auxileries, although the Broons was a just a weekly strip not a comic.

Micah Ian Wright did some quite overtly political stuff in Stormwatch then he got busted Sebb style for being a lying cheating bastard.

Re: Political Comics

I remember one strip that DC Thompson (how the heck do you spell it?) ran called 'Addie and Hermy' which was about two low ranking comically inept Nazis who looked like Adolf Hitler and Herman Goering. The few strips I've seen were quite good - sort of Laura and Hardy humour but with the protagonists being shot at the end of every strip due to their idiocy. I'm not sure which of their comics it was in or how long it ran for.

Re: Political Comics

I've got a book at home - 500 Comicbook Villains - that has a whole section devoted to "political" villains, wartime comics, comics with Hitler, Mussolini, etc as villains. It's not particularly in-depth but I could have a wee looksie for some suggestions if you like.

Damn, if only you were looking for religious comics. Still, political in its way.

Re: Political Comics

There were quite a few titles published during WWII in the U.S. and the U.K., but I doubt you will find much info on them apart from prices, titles such as Air Fighters, Green Lama, Fighting Yank etc. If I remember correctly there was a forum you could join and then download some of these gems.

Re: Political Comics

I just needed a couple more than 'Captain America makes all my points for me', but I got a few of these in, so ta

Was to make the point that comic strips reinforced the idea of heroism through fighting for a cause.

Essay is done and dusted.
