| Re: Edinburgh University going 'PC' crazy? There was definately one in my room in Cairncross.
I ignored it. I'm not offended by Gideons bibles, I just think they're pointless (at that age if you're in 'need' of a bible you will almost always already have one, or at least have the funds to buy your own - just the same with any other religious text) and raise the question of 'Why Christianity and not another religion? Why don't I get to choose?'. *shrug* |

I just think that, the more we strive for political correctness, trying to please everyone, the more we miss the point of life, living and choice - if we could tolerate differences, instead of protecting them, maybe the world would be a better place | It depends upon whether you deem this a case of political correctness or if it's more to do with the vast multi-faith (and atheist) make-up of today's university intake and the questionable suitability of religious groups targetting students in their own residences.

| Re: Edinburgh University going 'PC' crazy? See if people are so offended of finding something that isn't connected to their religion, why don't they just hand it into the person in charge?

(Speculation, of course, but not unreasonable speculation) |

| Re: Edinburgh University going 'PC' crazy? But to me, just handing them in would be the easiest option. Even if I found any religious book that I didn't believe in I'd easily pass them back in and set the Eddas in there, since if you supposedly believe int he faith you should have your own texts on you or near you.

| Re: Edinburgh University going 'PC' crazy? Another black metaller in "I believe in the scandinavian Aesir" shock!
Nah, fair point, but it is surely the same the other way round. Perhaps those who *want* the gideon bible could ask at their halls' reception or something.
Maybe if the Gideons printed their scripture on suitable roach-material, then they'd find more students making use of them. :P

t. | Haha, no quite! It's more of the pre-Christian Pantheon
But to me, it's the easiest solution. People can believe in what they want, but when you start wanting to ban one book which you dont believe in shouldnt even have an effect your faith, your being worse than them.

| Re: Edinburgh University going 'PC' crazy? Nobody's banning a book, though.
Everybody's got the same right to their own religious texts.
It's a quite intrusive, even if it's not outright offensive, to deposit religious texts from one particular religion in people's rooms, though |

| Re: Edinburgh University going 'PC' crazy? Thats what I saiy - if you dont like it, hand it in.
"targetting" sounds as if theyre trying to 'recruit' or 'convert'. I think its just an potentialy, unintentional offensive habbit, thats been around for years.
I think calling it "intrusive" is a bit harsh, but I see why you could say that.
Anyway, wheres my book of morman...

| Re: Edinburgh University going 'PC' crazy? I doubt that the Gideons print off the amount of bibles they do and leave them in hotel rooms and the like out of habit. There will be some underlying reason and purpose to doing so be it "spreading the word" or "provinding comfort in times of need".
Because we are a predominantly christian culture the habit is probably that we expect, and indeed maybe expect, the Gideons bible to be there. However can you imagine the fuss that would be kicked up if a Muslim group had been putting Qu'rans in students rooms? No doubt the Daily Mail would be up in arms and accussing them of targeting students?

| Re: Edinburgh University going 'PC' crazy? The fact is, the point of evangelical organisations is just that. To proselytise and push their religion to those without. That is the one premise of evangelism that is clearly intended. And leaving the bibles everywhere they can is indeed part of that strategy.
"Look at me, God, I saved all these souls.... can I get a front-row seat in paradise now?"

| Re: Edinburgh University going 'PC' crazy? The only real reason for canvassing students' rooms with Bibles—especially when you don't actually know what their religious persuasion is, save for the fact that you know an awful lot won't subscribe to your faith—is evangelism. I think it's probably quite disingenuous to try to distort or deny that fact. |
