Conman poses as Barclays chairman

Far be it from me to find the news that my former employers chairman down Manchester way has become a victum of identity theft...

A fraudster walked into a branch of Barclays Bank posing as its chairman Marcus Agius and managed to walk out with £10,000.

I wonder how Barclaycalm he is at the minute?

I reckon it was jeremy clarkson trying to recoup some of his lost cash.

If the Jeremy Clarkson thing involved Barclays I might have to go and have a cold shower.

It added that like any other customer, Mr Agius had been fully refunded.

"All Barclays customers have a 100% fraud guarantee as long as they take reasonable care of their information," a spokesman said.

The bank has now implemented stricter security checks for its senior executives.

"Barclays is resolved to do everything possible on behalf of our customers to minimise its impact."

Sounds like a publicity stunt to me.

In the "any publicity is good publicity" vein or deliberatly to highlight Barclays refund policy for fraud?

Seems an odd way to go about encouraging customers in your security. "Hell we don't even recognise our boss but we always pay for our mistakes so its all cool"?

They're obviously using the situation to highlight their policy, but that's just marketing I guess.

Aye, I'll concede its certainly an attention grabbing way of making the point if its been done deliberatly in a Max Clifford stylee but highlighting fraud protection by showing yourselfs to be supremely vunerable to fraud is a bit odd. (I dunno about branches but we certainly had a photograph of the chairdude on most floors of our call centres and he appeared on a lot of promotional material... I suppose thats as much evidence for it being deliberate as it is for Barclays being a bit shite though.)
