| Anarchism Through my brother I'm reading alot more about Anarchy and social systems built on respect between the people rather than heirarchies and leaders. Hardly the media's representation of society descending in to chaos and violence since that would infringe on the respect of one man against an other.
What are peoples thoughts on an Anarchist society? |

i don't think things would be quite like Hobbes describes, we do find ways to cooperate... but you can;t root out selfishness so the ideal of everyone helping each other for the common good is far fetched.

| Re: Anarchism I think that the argument against it is summed up quite nicely in Steinbeck's Grapes of wrath when he wrote: Quote: |
"If you who own the things people must have could undertand this, you might preserve yourself. If you could seperate causes from results, if you could know that Paine, marx, Jefferson, Lenin, were results, not causes, you might survive. But that you cannot know. For the quality of owning freezes you forever in to 'I' and cuts you off forver from the 'we'.
| Guess that stands equally valid for socialism and communism aswell. |

| Re: Anarchism In a simplistic sense Hierarchy arises when one man has something another doesn't but needs, leading to control. Get rid of the mechanisms of ownership and this diminishes. Very idealistic of course. |

| Re: Anarchism I don't really think that human self interest goes against the idea of anarchism. Hobbes might say that without some system of domination any rational self interested strong person would take all he can, but surely self-interest goes beyond that - say, the interest for living in a peaceful society, the interest of not having your neighbours gang up on you cuz your being a dick, etc.

Nice. | worse still i think; wanting food and shelter isn't quite materialism, and striving for even those basic requirements would cause friction.

| Re: Anarchism Again, it's a nice pipe dream. Our social biology would probably require it to be enforced, though, which kind of defeats the point.
