Re: Legal age for alcohol to be 21?

Helen and Boocakes and toast just said everything I was going to, apart from maybe "let's nick France's idea and teach people about alcohol when they're young so it's not seen as a big deal". Raising the legal drinking age just adds to the mystique. Stupid.

Re: Legal age for alcohol to be 21?

Underage drinking was so much more fun than drinking legally.

Alcohols more a social then medical problem surely? Alcohol excess probably contributes yeah but poor diet and lack of excercise are probably a lot, lot worse.

In that light I suggest bringing back rationing and mandatory morning excercise drills. (Well I don't but both make as much sense as raising the age of consent for alcohol purchase)

Re: Legal age for alcohol to be 21?

Got to agree with what Mick says, you'd end up with more folk drinking who "shouldn't be".

I think about the only way to curb that would be better education on the effects of alcohol (but not so sure that would do too much), or to dish out silly sentences for those caught buying it for them......bit nuts really.

As I don't have much experience about the social side of things other than GP and A&E experience, so I'm probably a bit biased, but alcohol misuse really is a huge medical problem. I know that there is rarely just one factor affecting health, but alcohol is definitely up there.
As I isaid above, even in A&E with fights etc. I don't see how raising the legal drinking age will make any significant impact whatsoever.

Re: Legal age for alcohol to be 21?

One problem that doesn't seem to have touched on is what's actually going to be done to accomodate 18-21 year olds if they can't go to the pub, or in effect anywhere in the city centre after about 6pm at night. No private company is going to provide them with anything to do because it's not profitable if they can't sell booze; the government aren't going to intervene because 'state intervention' is a surefire vote loser if it doesn't work out perfectly. Moreover, the GCC are so concerned with getting "business" into the city centre that any such idea would be out the window before it even got put to paper.

The worst affected in all of this, strangely, would probably be students who stay in halls of residence in Glasgow (i.e. west end/city centre - publand). Most of them might be cunts, right enough, but it's still a bit harsh giving them fuck all to do.

Re: Legal age for alcohol to be 21?

There isnt such a problem with under age drinkin in France, although their attitude towards drinking is somewhat different from the UK's. Actually properly policing pubs, if they're selling too much booze to certain folk then their licence should be revoked. Put a stop to where people can get sold too much booze would help the culture. Im unusre how it would work in theory though

But there are problems with alcoholism & domestic abuse in older generations. Can't win them all, eh?
