| Re: Stop. Meccatime! Magnetic north is a navigation term for the way a compass points.
The magnetic north pole is a constantly changing area on the surface of the Earth.
The north pole is the northern axis of the Earth. |

Basically you have true north if you imagine a big pole at the north of the earth. Compasses point to magnetic north which changes depending on the magnetic field created by the molten interior of the earth. The molten interior is also affected by the moon and sun's positions so can bulge to one side, and this affects how far off the magnetic north is from true north.
e: I think - and Les can correct me no doubt - that magnetic north is about seven degrees off at the moment-ish? |

I know that magnetic north isn't the same as the magnetic north pole, though. That is, a compass points at neither the magnetic north pole, nor the true north pole, but points somewhere called magnetic north, which is basically defined as the place a compass points. This is hangover knowledge from being in the Scouts. This and knowing how to tie a reef knot.
What the numbers involved are, I haven't a clue. |
