Yes and no. As much as people complain about them, politicians are generally reasonably sensible educated individuals.
I'd hope that in the long term the majority will continue to rise above petty fundamentalist positions as they have today and yesterday*.
*barring, of course some wide-spread religious resurgence triggered by a significant external factor, in which case we're all fucked anyway.
