The anti-choice pressure groups are getting better at getting MPs to vote in their favour, and it was what the MPs, not necessarily the population, wanted here. There's also increased pressure when party leaders publicly come out and say they are in favour of a reduction.

Yes and no. As much as people complain about them, politicians are generally reasonably sensible educated individuals.
I'd hope that in the long term the majority will continue to rise above petty fundamentalist positions as they have today and yesterday*.

*barring, of course some wide-spread religious resurgence triggered by a significant external factor, in which case we're all fucked anyway.
