Re: Border Copyright breach searches

How long will it be before someone gets into trouble based on an ID3 tag that they generated themself by consulting with freedb when they're ripping a cd?

Current copyright laws make any tracks on an mp3 player technically illegal if they were ripped from a cd anyway.

Yeah, that's insane, and probably the biggest reason that's it's so easy to have a "fuck you then" attitude to the music industry when it comes to choosing limewire versus iTunes versus high street.

Imagine if you bought a jacket that you were only allowed to wear at home, and if you wanted to go outside you had buy wear (and pay for) a second, identical jacket

I do understand the difference between buying an object and buying a licence, but how after all these years it can fail to be obvious to the industry that they have to work towards giving consumers the products/services they want if they expect to be paid for them is quite beyond me.

Re: Border Copyright breach searches

Also mentioned is that encrypting your dodgy music files on your laptop isn't going to help if you're travelling, since The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 says we can be thrown in jail for 2 years for refusing to decrypt data when requested by law enforcement agencies, even if we "just forgot" the password.

Of course.. that's why you'd use TrueCrypt and volume-within-volume stenography.

Assuming a guy at the airport knew enough to identify my encrypted file, I'd be able to provide a password that would unlock the outer layer consisting of my CV, a couple of spreadsheets and maybe a word document, and then there's no way to prove than an inner layer exists.
