| China rights 'worsen with Games' Link Quote:
The human rights situation in China has deteriorated, not improved, with its hosting of the Olympic Games this year, campaigners Amnesty International say.
It documents the use of "re-education through labour", the suppression of rights activists and journalists, and the use of arbitrary imprisonment.
| Nae huge surprise there, then.
Love the fact they they'll get away with this kinda shit, while Iraq is banned from the games for having a corrupt government. |

| Re: China rights 'worsen with Games' You mean the fact that they hold political opponents indefinitely without trial, conduct summery executions and have been demolishing houses in Bejing without compensation simply because the authorities felt they were not aesthetically in keeping with the Olympic vision of the city isn't enough to fuck China over? |

I hope the actual games go well, and I'm looking forward to seeing some of them.

But it's not going to happen - China is too important to the Western economy for the US and the EU to make any more then token efforts to change them.
The only thing that could possibly really fuck China up is if they do something like open fire with live rounds on a crowd of Western tourists. |

| Re: China rights 'worsen with Games' I'm certain I've posted to this effect elsewhere but greeting about human rights, free Tibet and not getting a decent cheeseburger in Beijing is pretty fucking pointless after the event. These discrepancies were known to all and sundry before Beijing was awarded the Olympics in the first place and waiting until the year of the event to go global with the protest makes the protesters come across as disorganised malcontents.

Cheers.

| Re: China rights 'worsen with Games' I want the games themselves so go well. I love the olympics. (Mon Federer)
Seriously though something will most likely happen during the games. Demonstrations, riots etc. The uncovering of a labor camp would do the trick for me. It will e more than enough to shame China in its moment of glory.
I hope a few athletes, as well as a few politicians, make a few comments during the games annaw. |

Cheers. | If we take the Beastie Boys as an example of a high profile opponent of China's presence in Tibet then this band have indeed been vocal about this matter for years but I cannot remember them saying a thing about the Olympics going to Beijing at any juncture. The point I'm making is they and the rest of the Free Tibet movement really missed the bus on this issue and piped up when it was too late to reverse any decisions and they come off worse from it as they look disorganised and malcontented which takes some doing when you consider that their cause has a lot of high profile to grassroots support.

You gotta remember it isn't folk like me we need to hit this kinda info with, its the rest of society. Hence if something happens when the who world is literally watching China, it'll have more impact. |
