Of course planet Earth won't be shitting rainbows and fairy cakes for the next four years if Obama gets in, but the whole thing is quite exciting symbolically. And yes, you're right, the colour of his skin doesn't matter, it not mattering is one of the reasons this election is so symbolically exciting.
"oh wow, a BLACK GUY!!! has been elected, how AMAZING!!!....wait, what happens now?"

I see what you are saying, and yes, of course this type of shit appeals to the masses, but to me at least, this is how this election is being portayed.
Like this Obama dick is somehow the saviour of the universe as he is anti-war and black, and things are gonna change around these parts!! Shitting rainbows indeed.
    Capitalist ways won't change.

Also important to consider is not what Obama would bring to the table, but what he'd be stopping from being brought to the table. I.e. John McCain's lunatic, impetuous, belligerent, policies that would probably see us mired in yet another pointless war within his first term (e.g. his flat out refusal to entertain the idea of sitting down and speaking with Iran).
I'm of the opinion they're both just as bad, which ever way you spin it.
Both are in the game for the same reasons, to further themselves.
For every cockamaimy crazy idea McCain has, Obama has one.
He just might not be vocal about it...I mean why would he? Elections right around the corner, why blow it by trying to swing more votes with outrageous statements? He has the first black president thing going for him, media circus are lapping it up...Play it safe, it's almost a home run...

Nothing wrong with it, if that's how you view politics.
I guess I just like to rage at blind ignorance for the working class....the very people the "right to vote" was supposed to benefit.
What benefits are their for the working class, when your only 2 viable options are capitalist ones that have no interest other than swinging your vote to gain power and financially furthering themselves?

The BBC are reporting that it's entirely possible that the election may be over before polls close in the westernmost states.

Your politics are fairly far to the left, whereas most people's here will be left, but closer to the centre. So any differences between the candidates will be more significant to most people than they will to you.
In the same way that if you dislike freeform atonal jazz-metal as a genre, you probably aren't going to find differences between artists that significant.
The working class should all be the same.
The majority of folk that will be voting ARE the working class....but are only left with 2 capitalist options. Yes there's differences in what they "say", but it's for the same ends.
    See my last post.
I understand why people's thinking may be different, but this is my slant on it.

Comparing them to freeform atonal jazz-metal, is funny, but misses the mark by a mile mate.

Nope, I wouldn't, same as here.
My "non-vote" is my vote for the working class.

    How come?

    Never claimed that.

Clarify: Do you give a fuck about the US election?
    For Toast;

I don't give a fuck in the sense that it's a lost cause of a vote; either vote is a vote against the working class, and it won't change jack shit here, or anywhere else. I see it as merely an excercise in legislation. I'm very apathetic about it.

I give a fuck in the sense that alot of working class people see certain politicians mentioned here as a shining becon of political change, when anyone can see that their capitalist ways won't change shit, for america OR for anyone here.
Same kind of regime, under a different name. I'm interested in capitalism/socialism/whateverism but not specifically THIS one, more what peoples views are on it. This is why I post about it.

I was just listening to the radio and all the reporters seem to have decided that Obama's won already. I mean, lead or none, it is a bit ridiculous to act like it's all over and done with right now.

@AWESOMEUS MAXIMUS - Jesus Christ, I don't think I've ever seen the word 'capitalist' used so many times in one post.

Do you seriously think another system would be better?

I've got my own opinions, that I'll reserve for another thread, but in short yes.
Don't start asking me how I'd dissolve capitalism though, as many great minds, 100000% greater than mine, have tried and failed.

Before you even start talking about dissolving capitalism you'd need to work out how another system would work.

This is where political science first year students usually point to Cuba.

Perhaps a system where specialisation in labour is abolished? You know, where people can be a fireman, a professional footballer and run a pub all in the space of a few weeks.
