Quite the opposite. There has been a whole spate of noose-hangings and racist displays across America this year, not all related to Obama either. People hung nooses from a campus tree beneath which African American students had been sitting, for example. The USA contains some of the most prominent bigoted backwaters of the developed Western world, from what I can see. I think they should get rid of the Hope and Glory part and just call it 'land'.

So a canvasser goes to a woman's door in Washington, Pennsylvania. Knocks. Woman answers. Knocker asks who she's planning to vote for. She isn't sure, has to ask her husband who she's voting for. Husband is off in another room watching some game. Canvasser hears him yell back, "We're votin' for the n***er!"

Woman turns back to canvasser, and says brightly and matter of factly: "We're voting for the n***er."

That's known as the 'Bradley effect' after an election race in the late 70's or early 80's (i forget, look it up though if you want the details).

However, there's been word of a "reverse-Bradley effect" in light of the economic woes and unpopularity of McCain's VP pick and policies. They reckon there's more quasi-racists or staunch republicans who would say they're not voting for the black guy then do it when in the privacy of the polling booth. Plus, there's a contingent among full-on white supremacists who are supporting Obama in the hope that he becomes divisive and he sparks the racial civil war they've been praying for. David Duke (ex-KKK grand dragon) has been quite vocal about supporting Obama to strengthen racial divides and "awaken" white people's inherent dislike for blacks.

People willing to say they're not voting for the black guy in this election haven't been in short supply, but McCain still polls unfavourably on many issues.

There’s a one-in-four chance that Sen. John McCain will die in the next four years, according to a contested interpretation of risks posed by the presidential candidate’s history of skin cancer.

“His mortality risk translates to 22 percent over a first term,” said John Alam, a biotechnology consultant and former cancer researcher who crunched the numbers on McCain’s cancer history.

That figure is roughly twice the death risk of a white male of McCain’s age, but without McCain’s past melanoma. Some researchers, however, think Alam’s model fails to account for McCain’s continued health.

“If after five years there’s no recurrence, his chance of survival for the next five years and the remainder of his life are significantly increased,” said Stanley Leong, a University of California, San Francisco oncologist whose research was cited by Alam in the estimate, published today in The Lancet.
