I call it an amusing and refreshing idea.
Cue backlash from religious loons unaware of how easily baited they've been.
The Humanist Association in conjunction with The Guardian's Comment Is Free and Richard Dawkins today begin raising money to fund a series of bus-side advertisements delivering an atheist message. They're aiming (initially) for approximately £11,000 which will pay for 30 adverts for one week.
I'm not sure what I think of this at all. My initial reaction was that it's a terrible, pompous, and almost embarrassing idea. There're many arenas in which debate about matters spiritual is acceptable, but the sides of London buses isn't really one of them. Telling believers who've not invited discussion that there's no heaven to go to is as obnoxious as the sandwich board Christ-men telling the rest of us that we're going to Hell.
However, the message ("There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.") is quite tame, and the whole thing is apparently as a response to a recent series of Christian London bus ads which encouraged people to visit a website telling them that unbelievers would burn in Hell. So an arguable invitation to respond has been offered, just like if the sandwich board Christ-man stopped me to condemn me to an enternity of Hellfire, I wouldn't feel rude in responding with my personal beliefs on the matter.
I'm concluding for the moment that it's still an embarrassing idea, if not an absolutely terrible one.
Story.

I had hoped their cash would be earmarked for political lobbying, like it’s meant to be. Not used for ad campaigns.
I think this sort of thing sets a dangerous ‘tit for tat’ precedent … although it’s Christian London who are really at fault, egging them on like this won’t ever help matters.
The interval between birth and death is fractal. Any given moment is infinitely deep and rich, and therefore one lifetime is quite enough for me.
I think it's quite good. The message is tame and not too serious - it's not saying that there's definitely no god. I don't see the harm in it.
"Your beliefs are probably wrong, and they're making you miserable to boot."
Its not its hard to wind some people up, I just don't see the point.

Bunny & The Misshapes: Really?
I like it. If the churches can have pro god ad's why can't their be "god might not exist" ads.
It's fun, lets be honest if that whirled past you at like half eight when you were on the way to workcollegeuni, you'd crack a cheeky wee smile.

They've raised £22K already: http://www.justgiving.com/atheistbus
Ignorance is the rationalist's idea of hell anyway, this is basically atheist fundamentalism. We are the way, the truth and the light!

I may not agree with every Christian in the world, and some of them may bug my box, but some otherwise VERY decent people need that blind faith to get them through the day. Maybe it's not all that healthy for people to be so dependent on something that they don't even know really exists, but a lot of people would have nothing at all if they didn't have that. I don't see how actively going around and telling people that they're wrong when IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER TO YOU is a very clever thing to do.
As I said earlier though - they're not saying that God definitely doesn't exist, just that it's probable that he doesn't. Personally it's not something that affects me that much - I don't really believe anything either way. But at least this lot aren't telling me that I'm gonna go to hell!
Sorry, wasn't really trying to sell it to you - just putting forward how I feel about it. To be honest I don't think it's all that important either way. I don't think "Yay - this is a great idea" or "OMG how could they do such a thing" - I just don't think there's any harm in it.
lol!! Sorry babe - not really all here today.![]()
