Nah it's probably just that they reflect how the news was reported at the time. This was an ongoing story over a few days, with not much new happening other then Burmese government are shit, people are dying ohmigodz spolierz! There was a shitload of other stuff going on. Boris Johnson being elected Mayor of London and Josepth Fritzl to name but two.

There are probably multiple reasons why it's been forgotten so quickly. Aside from what you've mentioned above, there's the fact that it's not a place in the world that many people are very familiar with, and the fact the government there aren't particularly enthusiastic about foreign journalists.
Still though, it was an absolute catastrophe. Up among the worst, and it's just faded into history.
